Yeah that's not in the slightest true. And has been proven by serious people in a number of different ways, beyond just the obvious sounding alike to regular punters.

Not a dig at them, just saying the comparison that has consistently followed them is justified.

No doubt The Beatles have been a huge influence on Oasis and they've used the odd lyric to reference them, some tiny snippets where you could make a case but to the ear they sound completely different - I just find it a lazy comparison.

I'd agree that if you played an Oasis song, there's no way that you'd mistake it for The Beatles.

Apart from the "I Am The Walrus" cover, I don't find the two similar and as you say, I think a lot of the comparisons are lazy on a surface level. I've no doubt that people who understand music theory would be able to put a fairly convincing case together but I'll bet you could say that about most artists when compared to what came before.

This morning, @journolud said that The Charlatans sounds like Oasis if they were trying to sound like a lot of other bands but certainly amongst their contemporaries, they sound fairly unique to me, which is why I like them. There is a part of "Get On It" that sounds a bit like Oasis but that's being picky.

I think it is lazy to deny it. Have a look for some of the a analysis on it, where people identify significant and lengthy overlaps. Even the AI ones. It is a lot more than tiny snippets. They also don't sound completely different to the ear. Hence sooooo many people keep pointing it out, many with zero musical training/knowledge. Because it sounds so similar to the ear.

Lost count of how many times I've watched The Charlatans. An absolute gem of a band. Tellin' Stories reminds me of good times. Some belting songs on that album. I find their instrumental tracks are usually top notch too. Was always confused as to how Oasis got more acclaim when in comparison they're world's apart.

So onto the Charlatans and I must confess that I've never listened to them before, aside no doubt from hearing the odd thing on the radio; not sure why I never bothered with Northwich's finest but next time I'm driving that Cheshire oasis, I'll be playing this album and a singles compilation that I've just ordered (2nd and cheap), which should be next Saturday when I go to Spurs game, as me Mum lives just outside Northwich these days.

I really enjoyed this album, which did take me back to another time despite my lack of familiarity with it, and the days of being dual income, no kids - ah the holidays, including Florida.

Don't think I can add much to Rob's fine review. Was amused that is almost started off being a Supertramp album before quickly getting baggy. The acoustic guitar brought to mind The Who. There's lots going on, plenty of nice touches.

Great to be drawn to a band one has previously ignored.

Sounds like Oasis would if they were trying to be lots of other bands and artists instead of just the Beatles

My writeup was going to say that the vocals sounded like a deliberate attempt of a cross between Bob Dylan and Liam Gallagher, but given others have already picked up on variations of it, Time Will Wait For No One...

Glad you enjoyed it. If there's time in the crowded listening space, I can recommend the album that came after this - Us and Us Only. There are times on that that the Dylan influence is even more apparent but they mix it up to good effect. Like I said in my review, it's a toss-up for which of these albums is the better.
