The Album Review Club - Week #147 - (page 1942) - Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan

Found the Avaishai Cohen intriguing. Has the feel of something that could be a bit of a one hit wonder or a JJ Cale style surprise. Will be finding out whether he can sustain my interest over a whole album, of which there appear to be loads to choose from

Only just had a chance to look at/first pass the playlist, what a fantastic and eclectic set of songs. Some absolutely top stuff and real blasts from the past too.

Initial kudos to:

The comrade :-) who picked Latin Quarter, saw them more than once back in the day and even their politically dated songs still have some punch to them. For personal reasons my favourite has always been No Rope as Long as Time.

The Be Good Tanyas pick. Such a shame they don't seem to do anything these days.

I Should've Known. I had a Till Tuesday album which I was a bit lukewarm on but when I bought Whatever and this came on as the first track you knew her solo career was going to be good.

The (very) acceptable face of prog in the form of King Crimson :-) They don't get enough of an outing in these parts.

The acceptable face of Zappa too! Every one else in the world loves Willie The Pimp but I can't be arsed with it whereas this track gets in and out tout suite, top choice.

As someone has already said Kiki Dee, great voice - not too many people from Bradford end up on Tamla!

The Handsome family - what's not to love about a husband and wife who like to sing the odd murder ballad.

In fact I'm not sure there's actually a duffer on here at all and there's been a few I've not heard before who I've really enjoyed. It's a really fun playlist, well done us!

I'm sure it has some level of profound depth to it, but (without being disrespectful to the nominator) whenever I hear it all I can think of is this

To be fair it’s the piano that carries it for me. The bass is good but feels a bit fussy and overdone at times.

I agree. Also found it a bit too long, could have done with being a couple minutes shorter imo. Intriguing though.

Thought about giving an album a go as well. Then saw how much material the dude has out and couldn't decide where to start.

I don't usually get much from the foreign language songs but that first one is a bit of a blast. Mind you I have been listening to Swedish band Dungen recently and the language barrier hasn't stopped me enjoying them.

Pleasantly surprised by the TRex as well

30 songs on here but I seem to be stuck on maybe 3. Talking about the ones that have made a big first impression at least, enough to explore more. For now.

While I quite enjoyed the opening song, I did think it sounded a bit 'eurovisiony'. Trying more of their stuff, they seem to have a mix of songs. Some that are better to listen to, and not trying to go mainstream, and some that are almost written to try attract a bigger westren audience. I prefer the former. Certainly an interesting band. Throat singing, who knew.

Tried an Avishai Cohen album as well, just went with the one the song is from out of laziness. It is very good, more jazz than the song suggests. Learned he is actually a bassist, hence the bass is so prominent it.

Absolutely love Woods (not The Woods as I erroneously said before, which is also a band and different). Like a cleaner less fussy Portugal. The Man. A real gem of a find for me. Not had a go at a full album yet, just been going through the popular songs.

Quite enjoy The Rat as a song by the Walkmen, although could never get into their stuff before. One of those bands spotify keeps telling me I would like, but it quite hasn't clicked. Maybe this song gets me there.

The Hu- Yuve Yuve Yu

A bit of Mongolian folk to kick us off! Hard to feel much connection to Mongolian lyrics and their culture. Great intro and pace throughout. Fiddle, harps, great sound and good fun.

T-Rex - Life’s A Gas

Love T-Rex, one of my favourite glam rock bands. Never really warmed to this one over their others though, Still a nice acousticy number.

Kevin Morby - This Is A Photograph II

Brand new. Cool song! Like the strings and beat. Good vibe.

The Be Good Tanyas - Draft Daughter’s Blues

Second folk, this one a bit more mellower, nice voice, lyrics and harmony.

Washed Out - All I Know

Atmospheric , real indie one this. Very nice.

Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satellite

Always get nostalgic hearing this and swear it’s always played on radio. Good Pop song.

Woods - Light Of Day

Another modern folky one, jazzy acoustic feel and a bit different.

Aveshai Cohen - Remembering

Had to check if this was the brother of Leonard after hearing the opening sound and beat. It isn’t. Very nice blend of sounds with the piano dominant. haunting jazz kind of feel with an intense but slow tempo. Different.

Joe Walsh - Life’s Been Good

The Eagle has landed! Classic 70’s rock, riffs , guitar and lyrically a nod to all rockers handling fame. Mid section is musically brilliant.

Aimee Mann - I Should’ve Known

The lovely Aimee Mann and her lead single from her debut album. nice jangly pop , upbeat and nice guitar. I should have knooooown ba ba ba.

Latin Quarter - America For Beginners

Ive hit a stumbling block here. Slow, Atmospheric, liked the Sax outro but just couldn’t get into this one unfortunately.

Welshy Arms - Legendary

Blimey! Complete change of pace and much welcomed. What a banger! Especially when that chorus kicks in.

The Walkmen - The Rat

2 in a row . Love this. Pure energy and angst but keeping that indie sound. Youuu’ve got a nerve! Hell yeh.

Off With Their Heads - Clear The Air

Following on from The Rat, another high tempo indie number. Good track.

The Magnetic Fields- Strange Powers

Surprised this was a mid 90’s song , sounds like something trippy from the 60’s. A nice enough listen though.

James McMurtry - Just Us Kids

American rock pop with a country vibe. Sounds a bit like Lou Reed. Nice and breezy.

Latto - Big Energy

Uh-oh, Nikki Minaj territory here. Cool sample from Maria Carey but I can’t enjoy the rap or take the lyrics seriously at all.

Black Sabbath - The Wizard

From 2022 to 1970! Awesome harmonica intro before the killer riff. Never keen lyrically about magic and wizards etc when it comes to prog rock. Still, a good heavy sound.

Kiki Dee - Amoureuse

Lovely voice, nice strings and horns and a crusendo at the end. Good work from Elton.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Live No Women, No Cry

Legendary track. Sounds just as good if not better live here and can feel the energy from the crowd.

Noel Gallagher - Live Forever Radio 2 sessions

I’ve heard a lot of Noel acoustic versions of Live Forever but this is one is the most atmospheric and stunning versions he’s done.

Cactus - Parchman Farm

fast and frantic love the harmonica and Jimi Hendrix style guitar. Cool stuff.

Family Of The Year - The Stairs

Uplifting Indie power pop. Reminded me a bit of the Polyphonic Spree.

King Crimson - Three Of A Perfect Pair

Always struggle a bit with Prog rock that has different signatures and tends to go off on its own tangent at times. But enjoyed the base, beat and pace of this one.

James McMurtry - Wake Up Call

He’s back! Now sounding more Johnny Cash. acoustic drive and good fun lyrics. Hope he’s found his glasses.

Bjork - Big Time Sensuality

One of Bjorks better ones - funky house and a good beat. What’s not to love from the whacky Icelandic.

In Tua Nua - Don’t Fear Me Now

catchy pop number and slide guitar , she has a good voice. Fleetwood Mac vibe.

The Handsome Family - Weightless Again

I’ve surely heard this from a film or series ? Strong lyrics, cool American song. Neil Young sounding on vocals.

Frank Zappa - Peaches En Ragalia

A lot going on here, So many different sections, some joyous moments and uplifting. Frank Zappa not really my cup of tea but this one’s ok.
