The Album Review Club - *** Christmas Break Playlist (next album 7/1/26) ***

Like it Rob and SB will love it and was looking forward to seeing them live one last time but Rob has Covid so it might have to wait a little.

They rarely let their fans down so they will make it to Melbourne on March 27 come hell or high water with Rob H in toe one last time and Sydney where they were to play is awash with rain as I write this with mass evacuations on the go meaning they will have to wait until April but well worth the wait.

BTW 10..............1 is in my top 50 albums of all time.
Hope they get to the UK again!

I went in there once or twice many years ago. Did they used to have a Folk night in the 70's? Got dragged to one once, sure it was there.

I'm not a drinker but once upon a time we used to have these school reunions that were pub crawls around Macc.
70s was before my time, I didn't move to Macc until the 80s but you are right about the folk club, it was still going strong when we used to go. Regular host was a Sue Capper who was in a band called Kinesphere in the 70s

We used to go to support my friend who was a regular player there, just for fun his favourite track of mine...

I didn't live in Macc until the late 80's (left for the Thames Valley in 1990) but spent much of the 70's at school there.

Despite being a long-time fan, would you believe that I only caught up on their pre-Diesel and Dust albums before Chrtsimas! (although I had heard their well known hits on a compilation). But yes, the new album is fantastic as is 10 ....1.
Try if you can to get to their last gigs in your neck of the woods albeit without Bones they still put on a great show despite their age and want to leave live performing gracefully.

Your great grand children will love 10.........1 unless they are spooked by what they describe as music today.

I have been a fan for over 40 years and been fortunate to see them live a number of times.

One more for the road as they say.

As Melbournians say one the best things to come out of Sydney.

Probably not going to happen - one date in London and we already have loads of trips on this summer. I’m sure the gigs will be fantastic.

Bare Wires – John Mayall’s Bluesbeakers

I found this to be an enjoyable listen without it being spectacular. There’s a decent amount of instruments used including organ and sax but no one instrument ever overwhelms the sound.

I did find some of it a run-of-the-mill blues sound which is OK once, but not the kind of thing that pulls you back for another listen. I’m sure that it would have sounded more revolutionary to Bill hearing it for the first time in 1968, so I can see where he’s coming from.

The last track is best, and closest to the kind of blues I enjoy, featuring some nice acoustic slide work.

7/10.

It may sound run-of-the-mill Blues in places but I kind of think that is an issue with Blues songs any; however, there's been a whole lotta Blues recorded since Mayall put out Bare Wires so it probably didn't seem so familiar back then.

I don't think it is an outstanding album and I'm hovering between 6 & 7 out of 10 based on two listens but I did buy a 2nd hand copy on line as I don't have any JMB in my collection so I will be listening to it again. It's the fourth album reviewed here that I have purchased as a result of it being selected.

That Taylor solo Bill mentions is good. The lick at the start reminds me strongly of somehting else; not worked it out but might be a Deep Purple song so it could be something Blackmore took inspiration from.

yeah, that’s the thing - I think I like the blues, but I get bored when it all sounds the same. I definitely like the blues when it’s played on an acoustic/dobro, but I find a lot of the electric stuff like paint-by-numbers. Not saying JMB is like that all the time, just a general comment.

Short and sweet. I’d have expected a glowing review with that core!
I’d just gone straight into a second listen in a row.
I obviously know who Mayall is but have never actively gone out of my way to play any of his stuff.
Hadn’t heard this album before and expected it to be good but dated.
Far from it. It sounds beautifully fresh to me and is right up my alley.

I’ll play this as much as I can this week and see if it’s still a 10 by the end of the week.

Don’t worry Rob, I will give my impression of how I feel about it later.

There was a few Blues bands around, late 60's, Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, Yardbirds etc. But none of them fused Blues with Jazz. I think Mayall was the first to do it with Bare Wires. If you hone into the Bass and drums on the suite theyre actually playing Jazz riffs and rhythms. Whereas Taylor is playing Blues/Rock. It's a definite fusion.
I wish JM had made more albums in this vein.
Interesting to have a violin on this album too.

Remember also when he played that incredible Solo on "I Started Walking" Taylor was 18 years old.

This track (I Started Walking) is typical of the Bass and Drums playing very nice Jazz, whilst Mick plays a sort of Rock/Blues solo. Very Fusion.

I like Mayalls words here, like a diary entry.

Weird one this for me.Loved all the instruments in this record more than the actual songs.Hope that makes sense.lol.
Never knew Mick Taylor played on this so was always going to find something to like.
Interesting choice.Thought about a 7 but will go for a 6.
No real favourite track just an enjoyable record with the various instruments on show blending well to make a delightful noise.

4th listen already.
I’ve had two days out of work this week which has helped.
Reminds me of my first introduction to this kind of music.
My older brother had a compilation album called ‘Fill Your Head With Rock’ from 1970. There was some wonderful stuff on it.
Two very much in this vain are;

I love this music when it is done well.
Authentic.
Honest.

I was an interesting listen as it's a genre I don't hear much. I would say it's very much of it's time though and while a pleasant enough listen, it's not something that I would personally seek out. I can enjoy a track or two at a time but found it a bit difficult to listen to all the way through. All Your Love was, for me at least, the standout track.
