The Album Review Club - Week #194 (page 1303) - Ants From Up There - Black Country, New Road

Am not someone who evaluates an album or song in any great detail I either find it enjoyable or not. The singer has a lovely voice and for me it elevates the album to a higher level for that. Would I listen to it again, yeah for sure depending on mood and place. Like someone said her vocals make the album for either good or negative reasons

To be honest the vocals didn't really bother me that much. She sounds like Florence Welch but that's the way she sings it was more the one paced nature of album.
Hey Now was a decent start evoking a little bit of The xx and Air at one point but it wasn't until Flickers probably the song I liked the most that the formula changed.
I bore in mind this was a debut but not enough here explore further.
City won but can't be anymore generous than a 5 I'm afraid

There's nothing wrong with a one paced album, if it's a pace that suits you and you can fall into line with. After all I don't ever recall hearing someone complain about Discharge or Motorhead being one paced. "It's all very well this hardcore punk/ thrash metal etc but I wish they'd slow it down and sing a fucking ballad or two..."

As it happens I liked the pace of this album but also think there's enough in it to say that it isn't totally one paced. OK, from a stroll it never gets to a sprint but there is a little spring in the step of some of the songs.

I like her voice but do think that sometimes she tries to do too much with it and could reign it in a bit. There's maybe a sense that the band are trying too hard and there's no real need. When they take it easy...

A criticism I read compared them to Adele b sides. Someone earlier compared them to Dido. Dido might be a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, emotionally manipulative as her music seems to be. There's some emotional heft to London Grammar as well.

All my listens have been to the extended version of the album because that's what I started with. If I was to rate the original 11 tracks I would have to summarise that it falls away towards the end. Unusually in my view the extended version sees it pick up and finish with a bit more of a flourish. Stand out track on the album is Wasting My Young Years.

Lyrically a bit wanting at times but I'm not getting too hung up about it. Overall for a debut album it's not bad at all.

I remember listening to the XX when they were the thing and being impressed but I hadn't listened to them for a long time. As part of my homework I gave them another listen this week and find I much prefer London Grammar. There's a bit more flavour here than the XX and better vocals.

I'm currently listening to the second album. More of the same which for most will probably be too much of an ordinary thing. For me another album to get into it.

I was close to an 8 for this but given that I should be rating the original album that's a 7.

My nomination for later today will be one that has personal interest to me - met the lead singer on a few occasions in company of others. One was one the seafront in Llandudno after a gig they'd done there. I can still remember how strong his handshake was 45 plus years later. Second time was during a time in his life he had a recreational drug problem some 20 years later.
The band themselves were name after a recreational drug used on the soul scene in the 70s

Come on Shackattack, you know it's tomorrow lunchtime for the cutover :-)

Only had one proper listen but it's not really my thing. Very samey, not getting the voice at all. It's not grating but there's something not clicking.

4/10

Private tour of Skara Brae tonight, meaning I can go into the houses...after a beach walk with the mutt first.

My selection is dexys - searching for the young soul rebels

We know it is (that's why I said Come On Shackattack in my last post) but you're not supposed to have told us this till tomorrow!!!!!

I assume it was the Winter Gardens/Astra ?

I was going to start discussing but I should focus on my review of this week's album which doesn't finish till TOMORROW !! ;-)

You'll also be getting a horse's head from the Clue Mafia for spoiling their fun.

Sorry never got subtle hint!! Had a bit of a mad day. Never realised I thought it was today!! In relation to question I'm pretty sure it was the Winter Gardens.

I was going to be less subtle (and reference the actual pick) but I couldn't get "I'm not being flash" into a sentence that wasn't so obvious that it would spoil it for tomorrow's clues. But it turns out I needn't have worried!

It's cool, kick the new album off whenever people are ready to listen.

Any late reviews on this week, I'll tally up around 2pm.

If You Wait - London Grammar
Fitting that I should be up against the deadline with an album title here suggesting one more day before the next album might have been best. If you wait, indeed.

The first song that I enjoyed was "Stay Awake". The vocals really complimented the music on that track perfectly. The guitar on that, not overpowering, but in step with the vocals really highlight what this band can be. The lyrics on that were very pronounced too: "I don't have a soul like you, the only one I have is the one I stole - from - you."

This too reminded me of Florence + the Machine, but this one has taken a bit longer to appreciate than from a band I already enjoy. Not sure because I liked the music enough in places, but in some of the songs, things may have started slower than needed.

The atmospheric musical sounds that pick up in songs like "Wasting My Young Years", a very personal and well delivered song. "Strong" was another song I see was popular as a single, and the only one here that charted in the US on Adult Alternative. I clearly missed it at the time, as well as this band, in hearing them for the first time here. "Metal & Dust" like many other tracks, started slow, and had the catchiest of refrains with the "We argue, we don't fight" until it reached the vocal ending.

It's a good thing I wasn't guessing who nominated this album, because I would not have gotten this, not at all. @southamptonblue mentioned in the write up on how London Grammar took Kavinsky's original version of "Nightcall" and improved upon it. And I'd certainly agree - because after hearing those originals "vocals", there was no place to go but up! ;-) Seriously, the remake on this album, improved upon the original, and vocally was day to the original's "night" version. The track was one that seemed to work best to me where the slow build up to a musical and vocal synergy worked better than others that didn't get there.

I too agree with @journolud as the bonus tracks helped the album ending, with "High Life" and "Maybe" actually being better than some of the songs prior that originally concluded it. The title track was clearly another personal song with lyrics spelling out "'cause I can't give you anything".

Fresh off the "blandness" and "sameness" tags of our last nomination, I however found myself getting lost in some of the other songs here in this case. I'm not going lower than a 5 as was a common theme from the last album's criticism, but it won't be much higher either. 6/10 sounds about right for how this landed overall, with a shared appreciation of the vocals and the personal lyrics within being the most pronounced.

LONDON GRAMMAR. IF YOU WAIT

Sorry SB, this was never going to be my cup of tea. I managed two full listens.Unfortunately I have an aversion to a lot of female vocalists and Hannah Reid is no exception. The music is ok for dinner parties I suppose, to me it’s a coffee table album. As Journolud mentioned Dido I’m getting similar vibes and I don’t like her either.
