The Album Review Club - Week #195 (page 1310) - A New World Record - ELO

Given yesterday’s political charade in the US I wonder if you were packing your bags for a four year sabbatical somewhere. I’m honoured (I think) that you gave the pick some further ear time. Completely agree with the playing. Speed isn’t everything, but MF has something extra to make him a decent player imho.
I wish you and our other US friends in this thread good luck, it’s going to be an ‘interesting’ period ahead.
Ha. No we are having the whole house repainted and refloored so my wife and I moved into a small space we converted attached to our garage for a few months :) She's going to our house in Oregon for most of it while sadly I have to stay here for work :(.

It's okay music to pack boxes to. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't overly negative; sometimes records grow on me.

I still haven't really found the time to read others' what seem in depth reviews.

But it gets a 9 from me.

It has energy, lots of. It has weight, a bit of a excitement, interest, and technical quality. The last being actually the least imprtant, but the most obvious. Found myself nodding along, found myself tapping my feet and frowning along to some bits like I myself am focused on their delivery.

It does get repetitive, it does get a bit much, and it could do with more emotional tugging for a deeper connection. But those moments, the changes, surprises and thrill is more than enough to enjoy. Also had a coupe songs that I, the second they finished, played again straight away. Which is rare and worthy of a high score and recognition. Happy with that.

Due to having a hectic time this month, @Mancitydoogle has asked to move down the running order.

@threespires will be nominating tomorrow and next 5 nominators all move forward a week as follows:-

22/01/2025 threespires
29/02/2025 LGWIO

12/02/2025 Journolud
19/02/2025 mrbelfry
26/02/2025 BimboBob
05/03/2025 Mancitydoogle

Got a busy day tomorrow so if I haven’t called you forward by 2.30 @threespires, feel free to start posting clues and I’ll do the round-up later.

One mans changes, surprises and thrill are another mans jumping about and wrecking the groove!
Listening to this the 4 times I have done I couldnt get away from thinkign that Spinal Tap has wrecked any metal for me. I cannot seem to get passed the big hair, tongues out, gurning, devil horns hand gestures. For turning it up to 11, in this case, we play faster than anyone.
Barring Hangar18, Lucretia (although I think Mr Eldritchs song better) & Tornado of Souls there was nothign that really held my interest. As others have said, it jumped around a little too much. Seeming to have 3-4 different songs or themses within a song.
Not my cup of tea I'm afraid and therefore its a 4 from the Derry jury

I admitted that metal just ain't my bag. I did try to listen and put my prejudice aside but I cannot say I enjoyed it.
I can see that the band are excellent at what they do. They are technical, precise and clean. All at frantic speed and aggression. Even the term "Thrash Metal" has me heading for the hills and the nearest cave to hide in and thats before listening to Mustaine snarl his way through each track. I sadly found the album impenetrable. For what they do, I am sure they do it very well but you have to like 'that sort of thing' and honestly, I would rather listen to chalk on a blackboard. To be fair, if it was for enjoyment I would give it 1 but because there is a great deal of proficiency in the band I will boost the score to 4.

I was looking at 1990 to see what albums I was enjoying when this was released. 'Listen Without Prejudice', 'I do not want what I havent got', Jordan the Comeback and 'Rythm of the Saints' stood out. I was clearly going through an easy listening phase so Thrash Metal had no chance.

Megadeth - Rust In Peace

Let’s face it, we’re all getting on a bit and just want a easy listen aka Rod Stewart, but the hell with that - we also have to take ourselves out of our comfort zones and appreciate a pick like this and I think we’ve matured enough to give it a fair listen and review despite thrash metal never going to score well - So hopefully no one gets discouraged when scores are low because it’s good to have a variety of genres.

On first listen this definitely washed over me, just to thrashy and frantic, lacked melody and couldn’t take to it at all.

After a few more listens the music becomes less thrashy, I could appreciate the small changes of pace, the solos and the riffs but! That’s pretty much where the positives end, As a whole there’s just to much going on, it sounds messy and all scrunched up without a breather - lyrically meaningless, I’ve no interest in ‘darkness’ ‘evil’ ‘holy wars’ etc. There’s definitely some ‘fuck yeh’ moments, listening to the ending of Hangar 18 for instance and the frantic opening of ‘Take No Prisoners’ , I’m glad many appreciate the talent and complexity being played.

Good fun, Good pick but unfortunately like most on here it’s outside my aural pleasure.

A quick summery it has been a busy week.
Outside my comfort zone.
The only way i will listen to this type of music again is through this thread.
The singing voice i just could not get into.
Not one song would i say i liked.
The weird thing is i found some of the guitar riffs great but the solos poor and vice versa on other songs.
4/10

Megadeth - Rust In Peace

RIP is *the* best "thrash metal" album. Each song is melodic, fast, head-banging and the lyrics are well-composed - not some inane ramblings typical of the genre.

It’s definitely one I will keep trying with and going back too, further listens I was really more appreciative of the solos and riffs.

Who knew it would be thrash metal / doom rock that put bennyboy and I on the same score for a selection?

I didn't have that on my BINGO card. 4 seems to be a popular number this week, so I may not be the only one experiencing this rarity.

And I'll agree with @BlueHammer85, it is good to get the variety here and that is always welcome.

(and I say that with full knowledge of who is up next... ;-)

Very mainstream this time round (but I'll be going for it on my next one:-) )

The second consecutive week featuring a brave, non-typical selection. Thanks to a late rally, Rust in Peace by Megadeth scored an average of 5.32 from 14 voters. Thanks to @GornikDaze for the nomination.

Next up is @threespires, who is threatening something relatively safe. Probably not a bad policy after the last two weeks but let's see what he comes up with.

OK, I'll start with a bit of a "if you know, you know" clue and will post something more gettable if there's no takers..

Archibald? MacLeish? That's almost 20% of Aberdeen's ECWC side from the early 80s!

No idea in the music context.

The artist isn't Scottish but has a connection, though not through Aberdeen's ECWC side :-) Archibald MacLeish was American and is pertinent to the album title.

I really am crap at clues
