The Album Review Club - Week #195 (page 1310) - A New World Record - ELO

Yup, well done that man. Here's what @BimboBob had to say.

Electric Light Orchestra - A New World Record

It's Sunday. Just after 4pm. Mine and my Dad's bellies are full to overflowing from the roast that my Mum lovingly overcooked. It was rude to complain or moan because I knew what was coming next. The short trip into the front room, Dad carrying his ashtray and scotch, me, my hopes that this weeks choice would knock my little socks off. I already knew it would be ELO, he'd given the game away the day before as I watched him buy it, but I hoped it would be better than their previous record which I found, at the time, to be a little dull and long winded.

As soon as the opening song 'Tightrope' kicked in I was hooked. And so was my Dad. It got a second play through, which was mostly unheard off as he liked an afternoon snooze before the pub reopened.

A New World Record was a turning point for ELO. Their previous three albums failed to make a significant dent in the UK charts so things needed to change. Out went the long winded sort of prog sort of not hit and miss style and in it's place a more punchier, pop orientated offering. It's also a better produced album than the previous three, in my head at least, but the strings and arrangements are still front and centre. It also has my favourite ending of any record, the delightful Shangri-la.

I play this record at least once a month. And yes, it's the very same one he bought all those years ago. A bit battered. But still loved.

  1. Tightrope
  2. Do Ya
  3. Telephone Line
  4. Rockaria!
  5. Mission (A World Record)
  6. So Fine
  7. Livin' Thing
  8. Above The Clouds
  9. Shangri-La
Good job I like the Beatles

On the subject of father and son music, my 18 year old has just DM'd me to say that his Spotify wrap has estimated him to be 60 years old :-) Can't tell if he's outraged or quite chuffed.

Ha, my musical age is 26!

And my music club is.. I shit you not.. 'Grit Collective'! Couldn't make it up. Either that or sporify is watching me.

Big fan of ELO growing up, from this album Rockaria always stood out for me alongside, of course, telephone line. The original release was before my (musical) time, so was bought after Out of the Blue and suffered for years because of that. It was only later in life I truly appreciated the earlier albums

I don't use Spotify but I suspect if I did it might have had me as younger than him. What my service did tell me was that Arc Light was my third most listened to album in 25.

75K minutes (51 days), 283 genres (#2 Soul and #5 Folk), 78 age (LOL - I credit/blame the Rock Evolution Playlists there), Boy & Bear 4 of the top 5 behind the new Doves' "Cold Dreaming", 75 albums with Boy & Bear tops and my top artist (0.1% category, top 4K in the world).

From this forum, The Jezebels Prisoner made #5 in my Top 5 played, so no one can say my high score there wasn't justified.

Finished off with a nice "personalized" message from Tim Hart from Boy & Bear.

I couldn't have done it without Blue Moon, that's for sure. ;-)

On my most played on Spotify one of the artists is Greenleaf.
Cannot remember them at all.
Did they get nominated on this thread

Yes, @Coatigan nominated them back in June, and it turns out you like that one (8/10)!

Spotify reckons I’m 71. Sounds about right.

Don’t know why it thinks Spoon are my 4th most played album. Don’t remember listening to them.

Lord Huron’s latest is my most played album. That’s definitely correct.

I've always thought the algorithm has a recency bias weighting. It does also favour certain artists for sure. Over the years there has been stuff I know i've listened to way more than things that ended up in my top 5, and they never made the cut.
