The Rio wink was right up there, he is a genius.

I also think it's good for the team because he's a lightning rod, other players can just go about their business because Mario will keep the papers busy on his own.

I must be missing something but why does the Rio wink make Mario a genius?

The reaction i'm assuming.

not adding to the list but evrything you needed to know about balo was contained in his debut for city..during 25 minutes of pure entertainment in Romania he;

1. scores the winner.
2.makes 2 important defensive header clearances
3.squares up to a defender.( the 1st time we see the balo hard-man act)
4. goes close with 2 more efforts on goal.
5. takes two corners: and
6.gets serious knee injury with the last kick of the game.

gotta love our mario-what a debut!

He was completely under control and set Rio off like a firecracker. Nothing like getting in your rival's head.

Ah well all about opinions I suppose.Typical of the over hype of a player when just being cheeky, something from a playground ,constitutes being a genius.

I've no idea how old you are but from your username I assume you're a similar age to me. If so how did your disapproval threshold ever cope with having 4 wind-up merchants in a City side? I mean of course Messrs Doyle, Lee, Summerbee and Coleman, who as well as being very good players could be guaranteed to wind-up their opponents (and the fans) on a regular basis. Oddly enough they all played in a really successful City team so maybe the tactic does have an impact? IMO Balotelli is a worthy successor to the above players, pure box-office in an era when the lack of characters in the game is regularly being lamented (often by the very same people who slag off Mario!).

You are right that my support of City goes back to those golden days.Since when though have I suggested that Mario isn't box office even if mostly down to what he does off the field. I don't have a problem with any City player winding up the rag players and showing that he is a real character. All I said was that a wink doesn't make somebody a genius.

The 4 you mentioned were indeed characters and always likely to wind up the opposition and at least 3 of them were truly excellent players but I would never have called them a genius for the winding up they did.Not even for their football and it's the same for Mario.

A character yes and the game is all the better for it but a genius? I don't think so.

For goodness sake! I doubt if that poster actually believes that Balo is the equivalent of Einstein, or even of a footballing "genius" such as Messi (whom I would also object to someone calling a "genius", if that person meant it literally)!

I agree that these days the word "genius", like words such as "tragedy", is used far too lightly. If that poster really does believe that Balo is a "genius" in a literal sense, then his intelligence is so suspect that he isn't worth answering.

But if we're going to haul every poster up for imprecise use of language, then there are many, many worse examples than calling Mario a "genius".

And the forum would be even more full of nit-picking threads and posts than it is.
