I reckon those Richard III Society folk finding his grave and remains under a car park in Leicester has got to be up there.
Any advance on that?
Any advance on that?
Great shout that, mate.1923 - Edwin Hubble the pipe smoking quintessential English gent with his tweed jacket, well he was American but from what i read of people who worked with or knew him he should have been English and kept in a shed with tools by all accounts, i digress...
In 1923 he conclusively proved the Andromeda galaxy was indeed a separate galaxy and very very far away, not just a nebulae/gas cloud at the far end of ours. Until then our galaxy was the entire universe as far as we knew, this man comes out and say's we are one of what he now knew to be beyond count. Imagine being told that back then, flight was in it's infancy and religion had a stronger hold then on those with less education than the lucky few. I can imagine large sections of society finding such an idea very scary, the fact we are so very very small.
What would be the equivalent now? being told there is advanced life detected? i mean most people i know who have a grasp of cosmology are forced to the same conclusion i am, namely there probably is!
