The Bluemoon Song Cup 2023

We also praise songs without knowing which posters we are praising!

I am 0 for 1 thus far and will surely be 0 for 5 but I was pleased that I got more than just my own vote for the one I chose!

One of my winners was very left field. Another, just got lucky with the opponent. The others? No chance! I must have been in a weird mood when I picked them.

Tactical voting?

I can't see a point, it was always going to be a landslide. One or two might be a protest vote, but I'd say most are genuine. It is more who they are that is the surprise, to me at least.

There is a lot of luck with the opponent in this first round. If I have one "complaint" it is the points system which rewards heavily those songs that came up against those left field no hopers which have added dramatically to the richness of the competition. It would be harder to close that points gap in later rounds when the weaker songs are reduced.

That said, it isn't a real complaint, just an observation and maybe when BH runs the next one it might get tweaked here and there :-)

As for my picks, I had a couple of certs, a sleeper which I thought might be more universally praised than it was, and a couple more left field.

I’m a Beatles man 99 times out of 100, but that is one of the most awful, mawkish, cloying, dull, pedestrian tracks in their catalogue.

They are imho the greatest band ever, but that track is up there with the other 2 parts of the Unholy Trinity (along with Yellow Submarine and the execrable Yesterday) as the three tracks of theirs to fast forward/switch over at the earliest opportunity.

Bearing that in mind, Biffy gets my vote without even listening to it.

Whilst I wouldn't go quite as far as that it mystifies me how this is frequently labelled the greatest love song ever. It's that kind of hyperbole that I think winds people up about The Beatles.

Indeed. Everyone knows the greatest love song was by Nick Berry.

Well I probably had The Beach Boys, Ewan Maccoll and Bacharach & David in mind when I posted but you're quite right Every Loser Wins is up there.

The really fucking disturbing thing is I didn't have to look up his 'song' title. Probably means I should be permabanned from all music threads.
