It's not often anything from Coventry gets my seal of approval, but they do on this occasion.
To your point, one of my favo(u)rite music critics who liked and respected Petty but never really so much his music put it best: “He has one great virtue--his total immersion in rock and roll.” I personally wouldn’t compare him with Young because Young is not only a great songwriter, he’s capable of being harder and angrier than Petty as well as more emotional. So his crunchers crunch more and his ballads have more feeling. He also never shied away from social criticism, and took lots of chances musically (remember “Trans”?). So in context Petty is really a straight middle-of-the-road musician. But that’s no criticism, because the groove he wore into that road was a deep one indeed. So while he wasn’t innovative, what he was was a (maybe among Americans THE) great champion of the genre and what the genre means to people who just love to listen, write and play. And all art forms need that.He was like Neil Young to me in that he appreciated great songs , great musicians , crossed genres , and of course was respected immensely by great songwriters , musicians , critics with way too many for his time and inclination wanting to perform songs written by him or collaborating with him in writing and in song.
I was moved by his narration on an Elvis documentary that my 88 year old Mother watches every day and as a result I played her some of TP's music both popular and some that only diehard fans would know and she loved all of it.
If Elvis were alive he would want Tom Petty to write a song for him to sing and so would the Everly Brothers and I could go on.
He is an absolute legend of music over many decades and his greatest pleasure in musical life was to listen to strangers walk up to him to tell what his music meant to them spiritually , emotionally , organically and how it helped them through their darkest moments.
This is the power of music and the legacy of Tom Petty that will transcend generation after generation to come.
This could be a very close one, both very good songs but tbh neither is a world class one.
Do you think anyone is clicking and listening to the songs before voting at this point of the cup?Putting up a live version of the Beach Boys isn't helping them tbh. Song loses a lot of its power.
As I said yesterday, I think most ties now will be close..... which is good for me as assuming my 2 songs get through, the tighter each game is means I'm less likely to get caught..... even if my songs go out, if winning songs are only winning by a handful of votes i have enough in the bag to remain on the top (without sounding like an Arsenal fan from last season....)20-20
It’s a bloodbath!
Agreed, please change it. Imagine a live version of Ghost Town.Putting up a live version of the Beach Boys isn't helping them tbh. Song loses a lot of its power.
