INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Joe Smith Jr. defeated Bernard Hopkins by an eighth-round technical knockout when Hopkins was punched through the ropes and couldn’t continue in his farewell fight Saturday at the Forum.

Smith (23-1, 19 knockouts) seemed to be winning the fight before the bizarre ending, as he was the busier fighter and landed more solid punches than his 51-year-old opponent.

Hopkins (55-8-2, 32 KOs) did a pretty good job of bobbing and holding to avoid the majority of Smith’s shots and had some good moments but the old man didn’t do enough to win rounds.

The end came when Smith hurt Hopkins with a right and then followed with a series of hard punches, the last of which put Hopkins through the ropes and onto the floor.

As per the rules, the fighter has 20 seconds to get back into the ring. Hopkins couldn’t do that, which gave Smith the TKO victory.

Hopkins had never been knocked out in his 28-year career.

He will try to get the KO overturned like he did with Dawson, should be no chance but anything can happen in the US. Like awarding a fight to Ward last month.

The Ward fight could have gone either way unlike the McDonnell farce that happened in Monaco (same night?).
Bent officiating isn't confined to the USA.

Great win for Jason Quigley that was impressive.

Yeah Jason EL ANIMAL Quigley looks strong at the moment only 25 this lad is and has taken to America well. Honestly think the guy has the skills to be a World Champion right now or within the next 12 months I would have him in with Andy Lee at middleweight. I could imagine that on Paddys day but i just think it may be just to early another fight then the Lee fight makes sense then a eliminator at the end of the year 2017. Quigley wants Chris Eubank Jnr too hes going to be the fighter to watch in the next 2 years. Can see him taking over from GGG when GGG calls it a day or moves up to Super Middleweight.

Frightening the Russian approach to drugs cheats, Povetkin fails another test on saturday and his fight still goes ahead (albeit with Duhaupas rather than Stiverne)

Boxing on Sky is looking really good in January. They are showing the Badou Jack v James DeGale world title fight and then 2 weeks later there showing argueable 1 of the best fights of the year Carl Frampton v Leo Santa Cruz 2 in the rematch. Fancy Frampton again to get the win wouldnt be shocked if he wins by KO. And all on normal Sky Sports and both would be a better fight than any of the 2 fights on that there showing on Box Office. The under card fight on Framptons card is a good fight too with the main under card fight being Mikey Garcia v Dejan Zlaticanin both undefeated someones 0 has to go. Also Lee Selby fights Jonathan Victor Barros if Selby wins and Frampton it brings us closer to a Frampton V Selby fight in the summer time too.

Plenty of decent fights coming up, AJ tickets went on sale today. GGG is supposed to be fighting Jacob's in March but don't think it's been signed off yet.
Jason Quigley was brilliant, made more impressive because the other kid was no mug with a decent ko record, pretty sure he's signed with ODH. Took it to him from the off.

As i was saying he wants Chris Eubank Jnr and it would be a really good fight both guys can bang. Chris Eubank Jnr fighting out in the US would make him a household name out there like his style and having Chris Eubank as his dad they could market him well over there. But I just dont know who Golden Boy will put in with him next. He needs to be tested more than that is he ready for any of the top 7 to 8 fighters in his next fight maybe not but give him 2 more fights for me he will be getting closer to those guys and in eliminator fights.

Cruiserweight Haye was the best in the business for me when he was fighting there a 2 weight world champion you cant knock him. Also he sold a lot of PPV money fights. People slagging him off for fighting guys on Dave well he is having the last laugh fighting on Sky PPV going to make a mint for beating up Bellew.

Haye is only on PPV because of Bellew. He's only made a comeback due to the money and that is why Bellew needs to beat him.

What happens when Haye beats Bellew?? He is back fighting after a major shoulder injury. I think fair play to him he is in a good place and from reports he is training hard in gym with Shane McGugian , George Groves and Carl Frampton all i am hearing there gym is buzzing a real feel good factor there. Groves fighting for a World title soon Haye is 1 to 2 fights away from a World title fight as well like him or hate him. Haye is a big ticket seller. Even if he is fighting bums.

Absolute nonsense..... If you think Bellew is the draw then you're sadly mistaken, it may be Haye needs the money but this will be bellends biggest payday by some margin, he'll also get destroyed within 5!!!

Totally agree, almost worth getting the PPV to see the Scouse bellend get sparked out, almost. A few of us get together for the bigger fights, so I am sure it will get one purchase from us all, but I wouldnt pay for this sitting on my tod. Fackin Eddie is laughing all the way to the bank with this fight, AJ/Klit and Kell/Khan all in the first part of next year.

I have a flawless link for the PPV, works through smart tv if you have one...

Haye will have a right go at a last couple of paydays and take the whole charade seriously, even a 60% haye twats him though.... Bellew is very fortunate here, prior to this being made he's done nothing but spout off about making 'cheddar', as he calls it, then to call Haye out on it?? Hypocrite...

He isn't fit to lace Hayes gloves at cruiser, never mind moving up...

You'll have to send that to me mate, most appreciated ;-)

Totally agree, Haye is probably the best cruiser since Holyfield and much more of a heavy than the mersey gobshite is,cant wait to see Bellyous get sparked out.

Golovkin v Jacobs in March 18th at MSG. If the Pirog fight is anything to go by then I think GGG stops him in 6 rounds.

The WBC have given Eubank Jr a ranking of number 7 at super middleweight even though he hasn't fought at the weight yet. Bit of a joke that is and screams of money talks.

I think its a sad fact of boxing all these PPVs. AJ v Klit and Haye V Bellew on PPV I just dont get maybe 1 the AJ V Klit fight but I also think Haye v Bellew do the bigger numbers in my eyes. More of a needle to it. Only if they stack the AJ card it wont do well. As for Khan v Kell I think it was a PPV fight 2 years ago not now. Both coming back off bad knock out defeats. I dont think this fight get made yet. Think both will have a warm up and i also think Khan will try and get the biggest deal possible as he wont be about for long 1 more defeat and he should retire.

Im shock Chris Eubank Jnr is moving up to Super Middleweight even at British level I dont see him keeping the power to troble the guys up there already. I think its a bad move by his team when staying down a rematch with Billy Joe Saunders would of been more of a winnable fight.
