The Conservative Party

I did note the revisions. Here is the link to Reuters on the subject.

German figures are no surprise given the loss of access to Russian gas. Taking in over a million Ukrainian refugees will also have a short term impact - although as some will settle in Germany that negative impact will likely reverse over time.

Countries outside of Europe did far better, but given there is a major war been fought on European soil this is not a huge surprise.

Finally, from the article:

Friday's figures are unlikely to be the final word on the topic, however, with other countries also in the process of revising their data.’

None of this is going to move the dial. The Tories have descended into internet crank territory, devoid of talent, ideas and competence. Shifting through the shit for a glimmer of gold ain‘t going to cut it.
As we’re in the Tory thread, I cannot see anybody that could argue that they’ve done a good job, and if they do, it’s all smoke and mirrors to mask the shit-show they’ve shovelled up.

I just thought I’d have a quick look at what the brains trust on here made of today’s GDP revisions, showing of course the UK economy to have performed better than both France and Germany since the pandemic, and proving again just how much the initial growth estimates tend to understate UK growth. Sadly however I haven’t seen any comments.

The revisions since the pandemic were of course signalled a couple of weeks ago - startling as they are, particularly in relation to Germany’s very poor performance - but the good news today is the stronger figure for the first quarter of this year as well.

I know how much people on here liked to reference the lack of any UK growth since the pandemic, and of course how the UK compared so poorly to France and Germany - even Russia according to some posters - so I’m keen to hear their thoughts.

Have a great day.
It was addressed on the Today programme.

It's Tory spin that we've performed better since the pandemic - because we performed worse during the pandemic so we're improving from a lower base. (The presenter said his park run times are getting better while Mo Farah's half-marathon times have got worse!)

Even more problems in dealing with the asylum backlog as there's what is being described as ‘an exodus’ of experienced, senior officials that have had responsibility for the oversight of asylum and immigration policy and development of associated future legislation. This ‘exodus’ is at a time when Government is seeking to introduce the most radical migration legislation in a generation and is failing to meet its own targets to reduce reliance on contingency hotels.

I don’t know what the presenter said or indeed what he was smoking, as we’re talking about the current level of GDP versus the pre-pandemic level, not the low point of the pandemic.

So any difference in scale of decline or pace of recovery is already accounted for, and the relevant figure is the current level of GDP versus that immediately prior to the pandemic. On that basis the UK has done slightly better than France and much, much better than Germany.

Evidence? Or just repeating what Sunak claimed?

And worse than Italy, Japan, Canada, the US and the Eurozone as a whole. So we’re no longer bottom of the G7. Seeing as Germany have been absolutely hammered by the Ukraine war due to their dependency on Russian gas, it’s no surprise they’re not doing too well at the moment. Hopefully we’ll maintain this growth but most predictions (including OECD and IMF) have us at or near the bottom of the table for 2024 and 2025.

Either way it’s not going to save the Tories who are resorting to getting involved in populist nonsense interfering with perceived unpopular local government policies and ditching anything perceived as “woke” like initiatives related to addressing climate change.

At the end of the day not enough people are going to forgive them for partying during Covid, all the corruption, the NHS crisis and the mishandling of immigration/asylum, even if they mange to salvage the economy and throw a few tax cuts at those that need them least.
