The perception is that he is a centrist.
He's not - his and Osborne's austerity programme was more right wing than Thatcher's economics.
But I suppose perception is all that counts.
His austerity programme wasn’t more right wing than Thatcher’s - not even close in fact.

In Cameron’s first parliamentary term they pushed through just over half as much austerity as Thatcher did in her first term. In fact between 2010 and 2015 Cameron and Osborne reduced the deficit by less than was signalled by Brown’s last Budget in 2010.
