The Conservative Party

I honestly think that this Govt doesn't care one jot and when these things happen and when there are desperate people are crossing the Channel as long as it begins to deflect and take the conversation away from Johnson and their crooked colleagues then thats fine with them.

There are more examples in the replies.

It’s really bad at the moment
Sorry that what i was meaning to say , there are loads of others cut off from benefits that killed themselves esp when IDS was in charge and the assessments were made harder , the assessments became inhumanising , i hate it when the brown envelope drops on the mat , they also take no notice of letters from drs so my dr says , they put them in the bin , the onus is on the individual to fight their own corner against the assessors who are given targets to get people off disability benefits , it is a sick tory game

I know, I quit my ESA job when it came in. It was horrendous.

I would agree to most of this but, and there is always a but, we need a cross section of society to represent us in our Parliament, and that includes the rich. How do we encourage them to take part if the remuneration does not cover their outgoings? It is OK if you are down here at the bottom where we are, I dream of having £82k a year but how do we encourage those well off to participate as well? Would you take a pay drop and maybe even lose money by becoming an MP?
You should become an MP because you're motivated by more than just money. The point of the salary is to allow people to become one who otherwise couldn't, not to compensate people for money they might be able to make doing something else. I'd be interested to know what percentage of current MPs are from extremely wealthy backgrounds compared to the general population. I'm pretty sure they're already massively overrepresented and always have been.

To be in the top 1% of earners in the UK, you only need to be on £160k. There are 650 MPs, so to be representative, there would need to be just 6 or 7 who would be sacrificing that status of a top 1% salary. There's more than that just in the current cabinet. £80k puts you in the top 5% of UK taxpayers so immediately by definition as soon as you're on an MPs salary you are relatively wealthy compared to most of the rest of the country. While it's arguably fair given their responsibility, it also means that they are rarely affected by the consequences of the decisions they make.

I personally think their salary should be tied directly to the median income of the country as a whole. That way if they do a good job and increase prosperity, they get a pay rise too. If they do a bad job and create loads of shitty zero hours jobs with crap wages, or cut benefits for poor families, then they get a pay cut too.

Blue Wall new Tories will love this - not. For so many who thought they had a ticket to a seat on the ideology money train will realise with even more clarity that what their party has done - what it is doing and what is coming down the track and facing the reality that their slim hard won majority will make them one term wonders. Johnson doesn't care he is totting up anecdotes so he can write his memoirs

He's in the shit

Quick panic - as if the Spartans and Old Guard will walk to cover his arse - fanciful

So Northern Ireland or France?

As France aren't playing ball I'm guessing Norn Iron is about to kick off.

That is one depressing poll

Fuck me - Marr giving it the full whataboutery trying to tar Labour with the same sleaze brush as befits the Tories this morning in a blatant rant that is far from BBC balance - client journalism - he should be embarrassed

Don't think you can really criticize him over that. Irrespective of the party, he should be grilling its leaders on specific examples and their intentions should they come to power.

Where I did think he was misguided was earlier when he suggested that the sleaze stories were running out of steam. That may appear the case if you are expecting them to lead directly to resignations, but we know today that politicians tend not to resign; well, not unless they are photographed in a tryst. Marr may personally be bored of them, and I would imagine it's rather uncomfortable confronting people about their skeletons, especially if there might be rattling coming from your own cupboard, but these stories will continue to appear for some time and damage reputations on both sides of the House.

This man is a clown and couldn't lead a piss up in a brewery he's a joke. He will just as he has been doing with is and every crisis continue to throw more shit in to get rid of the smell

ahhh I see why Marr was keen to keep any questioning away from Tory sleaze

Rees-Mogg's ridiculous Victorian routine has always been there to distract from the fact that he's a corrupt fucker. He's never minded people taking the piss out him, but when people start talking about his dodgy offshore investments, he gets pretty angry.

bunchacunts party

Like with nurses during covid, they're willing to stand there with their empty gestures, but when it comes to actually paying up for the job they've done, everyone goes quiet.
