Just a reminder, on Thatcher Death Day, how the Party got here. Glenda Jackson leads the "tributes" in 2013.
Could have been yesterday.

Yep, we can't even be the best at being miserable. What!!!……you mean some poor sods live in a more miserable place than us.
God help them.
Sounds excessive but what's that as a percentage of turnover?Tesco profits £2+bn during a cost of living crisis!!

According to the BBC:
"The UK's biggest supermarket chain said pre-tax profits hit £2.3bn, up from £882m, while sales rose by 4.4% to £68.2bn in the year to 24 February."
If profits more than doubled but sales only rose by 4.4% that implies the profits are truly excessive and they must be screwing their suppliers. Unless the typical basket mix is significantly different to the previous year and contains more high profit items.According to the BBC:

Or as an alternative explanation (i) Tesco took an exceptional billion pound impairment charge in 2022/23, which dropped out of this year’s accounts (ii) the BBC reported the wrong profit figure, either because they’re useless or wanted to create the misleading impression of a surge in profits, and (iii) people on here couldn’t wait to pontificate over an incongruous rise in profits on the back of a meagre rise in turnover. If profits more than doubled but sales only rose by 4.4% that implies the profits are truly excessive and they must be screwing their suppliers. Yeah… but they’re the only ones fit and competent to run councils and the government.what a shambles

Even allowing for a one billion pound impairment charge the increase in profits is still significantly greater than the increase in turnover.Or as an alternative explanation (i) Tesco took an exceptional billion pound impairment charge in 2022/23, which dropped out of this year’s accounts (ii) the BBC reported the wrong profit figure, either because they’re useless or wanted to create the misleading impression of a surge in profits, and (iii) people on here couldn’t wait to pontificate over an incongruous rise in profits on the back of a meagre rise in turnover.
Ah, the “Laurence Fox” approach to not facing humiliating defeat due to “woke administrative processes”what a shambles

I agree with the argument that supermarkets should be taking a hit with the rest of us, rather than increasing profits.Even allowing for a one billion pound impairment charge the increase in profits is still significantly greater than the increase in turnover.
And the taxpayer pays their staff because tesco don't pay them enough to live on.Tesco profits £2+bn during a cost of living crisis!!
Does that apply to those working a full week? If so then the minimum wage needs a serious rethink. If it applies mainly to part-time staff then it's hardly a surprise. And the taxpayer pays their staff because tesco don't pay them enough to live on.
Cost of sales fell from 92.6% of revenue to 92.15%.Even allowing for a one billion pound impairment charge the increase in profits is still significantly greater than the increase in turnover.
I've just done a quick calculation and I think that with the new minimum wage, you would have to work 41 hours a week to not be eligible.Does that apply to those working a full week?
