I don’t disagree, it’s just the words “good firm” or if anyone glorifies it I start to disagree.

I think they mean held their own, showed courage more than they were a good thing. Bill Gardener actually summed it up. He said he didn't think he was a leader of any firm or took any pleasure in it, he was fed up of being attacked and people coming to West Ham and taking liberties, so a few banded together to fight back and it grew from there. He was looked up to because he was one of the bigger lads and could fight well.

74 'ish West Ham came in the Kippax late 3.05 in the far corner about 100 of them. There was our English teacher right at the front with his West ham mates getting stuck in. They had some balls that lot.

One of our toughest lads at that time was openly gay. Can't remember his name but he was a genial Irishman who always wore a suit. Hard as nails too.

We used to get to away games, usually by service train, 2 or 3 hours before kick off. Find a local diy shop and buy cans of spray paint. The we would head to the ground and show of our artistic talents. MCFC....CITY WERE HERE.......COOL CATS. Happy days. Im nudging 60 now.

Yeah mate they stood in a perfect square donkey jackets n'all never moved an inch.

They took a coach to Wembley 81 replay with a flag in the back with MCFC and a tiger on it. Spurs were all knobs dressed like Jimmy Somerville in green jackets and had never seen a sharp dressed lad before the tramps.

Again nothing to do with the thread as such but I remember travelling to Leeds on a football special and Bulldog was kitted out in a suit rather than his usual donkey jacket. He was telling all and sundry he wasn't getting involved that day.

On the train back his suit was ripped to shreds and he was moaning about 'fucking Leeds cnuts' :)
