Dele’s story is not unique but it is a cautionary tale for any young phenom (something the likes of Foden. Palmer, Lewis, and others should take special note of).

For those that may not have seen the recent news, Dele’s been “banished” from his loan team in Turkey and it is reported Everton are going to terminate his contract. He’s now come out in a feud with the Besiktas manager, which I am sure will improve the situation.

From PFA Young Player of the Year (scoring the Goal of the Year) to being banished from playing and soon without a club in just six years, despite being only 26 (usually just the beginning of the prime years of a footballer).

I was thinking of other curious cases like this and the disappointing (and often short) careers after early promise of Stephen Ireland and Freddy Adu come to mind (the very last more of a global oddity).

I suppose you could add Balotelli to that list, as well. Though, I think it could be argued he had perhaps the biggest impact on football of all those referenced.

What other Delesque players would you add to the list?

Edit: I have removed my references to Michael Johnson and Paul Lake as some have taken extreme offence to their inclusion.

I will just explain that this thread was meant to discuss Alli (obviously) and other promising players (some that may have briefly achieved some measure of recognised success, as in the case of Lake, Johnson, Ireland, Rodwell, etc.) that never quite reached their perceived potential or their careers quickly fizzled out before their “prime” years, be it because of the unfortunate onset of early injuries, poor attitude, controversies, external events out of their control, overhype or some combination of all of that, hence the connections among them.

I believe they all present “curious cases” to be examined, discussed, and used as case studies for young players coming through now, so they might avoid similar outcomes, if at all possible.

Sir Marcus of Fish Fingers. Remove the PR and the lies told by the media, what exactly has he achieved ?
And whilst I'm on it, Sancho is heading the same way.

Down.

I don't get this. Marcus Rashford is 25 years old and has 75 PL goals. Unless his career is derailed by injury or he leaves the country he'll finish in the top 10 goalscorers in Premier League history. Already won a few trophies, good scoring record for England.

And yes, he used his public platform to bully the government into feeding school kids, which is about the best thing a United player has done for 50 years.

Not comparable in the slightest to Dele Alli.

Good shout for Sancho.

Honestly forgot he still played. ;-)

But I don’t think Rashford is a good example as, unfortunately for us, he actually has done quite a lot already and, if he can keep up his form from this year, will end up being a decent player all said and done.

Not sure it's possible to terminate a contract unless terms of a contract are breached. Not playing well probably isn't a breach of contract so presume he is back at Everton on the summer?

Presumably the terms of the contract include him being available to play for his loan club and Besiktas is essentially claiming he has not been (their manager said he went AWOL and Dele contradicts that claim) and want to terminate the loan.

That alone would likely be sufficient to unilaterally terminate his contract. Though, I am sure they could find a less messy mutual means of doing so at the end of this season.

Probably means pay it up (or a deal based on paying up most of what wages he has left to earn).

I've been watching the Sunderland doc recently. Rodwell is a classic. I have no idea what happened with him. Just seemed to lose all desire to play, but turned up to pick up his wage.

For the oldies on here, Graham French for Luton.
Unbelievable skills, great goals, loads of women and ended up in prison after a shooting incident.
A cross between Frank Worthington and Stan Bowles.
Recall an unbelievable goal where he dribbled all the length of the pitch but cannot find a video of it.

Rodwell is unfortunately another good example.

To me, anyway, I think it was less a case of losing all desire and more that the injuries took their toll and he couldn’t perform to the level required anymore. He then probably got advice to milk his contract as long as possible as he was unlikely to ever see that sort of compensation again.

And, to be honest, given how most clubs treat players (especially young and/or injury-ridden players), I can’t say I necessarily blame him for taking that course. Who knows if how previous clubs handled his injuries contributed the sudden collapse in ability (thinking of Fernando Torres’ downfall, though, he was partly to blame there).
