The idiocy (and selfishness) of panic buying

That's right the trade press are funded by the Tories

So, fuel duty is taxed at around 60% of the pump price in the uk. The price per litre is currently high at over £1.30 per litre of petrol. Have the government come up with a cunning plan to generate tons of money for HMRC quickly by saying there is no fuel shortage, knowing full well that everyone would go out and fill up following the toilet roll fiasco last year??
No, because there is no extra fuel being bought is there. Its the same amount, just all at once instead of spread across when people usually fill up.

funded by the tories no doubt. Funny isn't it that these figures just turn up. I bet Germany and Poland haven't lost 15,000 drivers just because of Brexit though have they, in fact they've probably gained drivers because of it. Plus those conutries they have no visible effects unlike the UK. If it looks like Brexit, smells like Brexit, tastes like Brexit then it's Brexit causing the issue. Every company has said Brexit is the issue

They still want to pay shit wages for a fairly dangerous and demanding job, as they have done for 40 years.

To be fair though, that same organisation also explained why the driver shortfall was more impacting here than elsewhere (due to issues Brexit also created)

We’re going to have to rely on other countries to help us out for the foreseeable future as we don’t have the infrastructure or skilled people to do the relevant jobs after we chose a services-based economy.

We’ll never be able to grow enough food to sustain ourselves.

How many countries don’t rely on other countries in some form? North Korea, maybe?

It’s folly to suggest we should go down that route.

What utter bollocks

exactly why would any EU national want to come to this country when they can get better wages and conditions elsewhere now. You have to be attractive as a country and quite frankly the UK isn't. Low wages, high house prices, poor working conditions, red tape for imports, high cost of food, RPI out of control, you name its just a shite state of affairs

In reality all this will blow over by the end of the week and some dickheads will have spent all day queuing up at the petrol station to pay well over the odds for fuel they didn't even need.

I've got about half a tank left, I'll fill up this time next week probably when I need it, like a normal person.

I don't think most normal people can go a week with half a tank.

Figures were from a variety of sources including the International Road Transport Union, RHA, American Trucking Association and China Road Transport Association - close very much open. To say that we are the only country with a shortage of HGV drivers is blinkered to say the least but you go ahead and spout whatever you want.

So you think getting rid of 15,000 HGV drivers was a good thing for the country and it has had no impact of the current HGV shortage problems?

Voting to leave the EU was, IMO, the wrong thing to do, that though wasn't the government's fault. Then COVID came along, again not the fault of the government. Can the government do something now to address the imbalance, very possibly but companies themselves have to start taking responsibility and stop blaming others for their shortcomings. Why is there a backlog of HGV tests still?

I didn’t say extra fuel being bought. Although it is possible that people are filling up fully whereas normally they might only put a smaller amount in at a time.
