The Labour Government

We have power of attorney for a family member with dementia.
Her life is hell and she can be very difficult.
She has carers who are absolutely incredible with her. They go the extra mile, even spending Christmas Day with her and making a special dinner. One even changed her holiday to fit in with a hospital appointment.
They can’t do enough for her.

We would love to show our appreciation of all their hard work but they are forbidden from accepting any gifts at any time from anyone related to our family member in either a professional or personal capacity.

Just saying.

What an excellent post. 1,000% agreed. I'd even pay them more if needs be. £100k or whatever they are on is not a lot when you consider the average GP probably earns more than that, as does a middle manager in plenty of industries. And we do need to attract people from all walks of life, not only those who are independently wealthy.

20 or 30 years ago when I was a travelling rep, it was the norm to drop off a crate of booze for a customer at Christmas. It was the norm to take them to the cricket or to wimbledon or whatever. Nearly all large companies have completely banned this now, both donating and (especially) receiving.

Why should it be OK for MPs or even worse, ministers. It's totally inappropriate and definitely leads to all sort of conflicts of interest. Parliament would serve the public better if ALL bungs were not allowed.
I agree.

Turned on sky to hear about the speeches and what labour plan to deliver to the country... Nothing but clothes and how ange didnt mention clothes in her speech, none the fucking wiser ,sky cunts

Gotta say it’s quite amazing how there’s suddenly been a massive pushback on freebies given to politicians over the last few weeks.
It’s as though much of the right wing press have found a new agenda to sink their teeth into.

I’m sure they are doing it for the good of the country though and not just blatant pandering to the Tories out there who are feeling a bit glum after the election..
Perhaps it's people really disappointed to find that those who have been criticizing the Tories, have themselves been caught doing the same thing? Do you think that might have something to do with it?

We might get some insight when Rayner and Reeves speak tomorrow(?)

Sir Keir might want to keep any big announcements until he speaks.

It would be nice if they don't go all doom and gloom and give the majority of the electorate some positivity that benefits us all.

Some of the leading Tories were criticised for breaking the rules. Which rules have the Labour front bench broken?

Yes, I said it deliberately for emphasis. Do you have a problem with that? Percentages can go over 100 you know.

Here's another one for yor you: Starmer has received 166% more in bungs than any other MP over the last 5 years.
Apart from Johnson. And other ministers.

?

I said "Starmer has received 166% more in bungs than any other MP over the last 5 years" and here's the data

I don't see Boris on there, or any other ministers receiving more than £107,145.

And he has form in this department, having spent £250,000 on expenses during his 5 year term as DPP, whereas his successor spend half that during the same term of 5 years. He likes the high-life at the expense of others, does our Free Gear Keir.

Whether they have broken the rules or not (although they have in certain cases (like Rayner not declaring her chum being accommodated for free in NY, for example), is that really your point?

It's OK to take bungs and splurge on expenses so long as you don't break the rules? Whilst taking £300 a year off people on £10k income per year? Taking money for your personal clothes and trying to hide it as "office expenses". You think this is morally acceptable?

And please don't tell me "well it's not a as bad as what the Tories did". What the Tories may or may not have done, is irrelevant. The Tories are not in power, Labour are. And we are talking about Labour are doing, on the Labour thread.

It's not only optics.

It's fucking diabolical rank hypocrisy that speaks volumes about the nature of the man in question. He spent YEARS spouting vitriol at the Tories for this sort of thing, whilst all along, doing the exact same thing, only more so, himself. What sort of person does that? What does that say about his sense of superiority above others? One rule for everyone else, but ok for him.

Second, there are genuine questions about improper influence being gained and in certain circumstances, direct conflict of interest.

I mean the ones mentioned who have more, Johnson, Truss and May aren’t MPs any longer.

Surely you appreciate that?

£6.4m is total gifts, donations, payments and other benefits for their various side hussles such as book writing, speeches and the such

If you want to compare like with like then 2019 onwards Starmer is on £925k not £107k per that chart

Lammy is on £800k

Rayner is on £450k

Sunak is on £658k

May is on £3.5m

And everyone’s favourite Corbyn is on £750k

Not a bad gig if you can get it is it?

I assume a lot of the £750k was legal fees.

I didn't understand what Vic meant, no.

But for you to suggest Johnson, Truss and May all took more than £107k in gifts over the past 5 years is an interesting accusation. Is there any evidence for that or have you just made it up?

Starmer has broken the rules on declaring income & donations on a number of occasions.

Late declaration, incorrect declaration and most recently failing to declare the gifts to his wife. If you look at the rules around these, they appear easy to follow, and I would have expected the former head of the CPS to be able to comply with these in an appropriate and timely manner.

How much did Boris receive for the flat renovation?

The figure of £60,000 seems low when the cost of renovation was quoted at 200K.

Doesn't the frivolous spending on a temporary residence alarm you at all?

There was plenty more to go in the pot.
