The Labour Government

Thanks for the link, interesting reading. It looks somehow we have been underestimating the UK population of workers by 484k.

Now maybe it’s me being naive but I honestly thought we would have accurate records of the number of potential working age people in the UK at any moment in time. Or certainly more accurate than within the nearest half million !

It’s a bit of an eye opener isn’t it?

The fact that the revised population data and projections - when applied to the employment/unemployment proportions reported by the Labour Force Survey - essentially suggest an extra 400k workers than previously assumed.

The revision has pretty big implications for the UK’s productivity data and as such the likely structural state of the public finances, which are now seen to be materially worse than previously assumed. That is of course if you place any great weight on the Labour Force Survey data, rather than the more reliable PAYE based employment data.

The data is supplied the ONS - The Labour force data has been subject to criticism for some time from the Resolution foundation - article below from last November...

Looks like they have conceded that they were wrong and not a reflection of what is currently happening.
The ONS is going to be reviewed as to how fit for purpose it is and I would imagine the answer will be not fit for anything.
These are the guys still refusing to go back to the office for even two days per week and working to rule etc with potential of strike action if they cannot WFH full time - all whilst the quality of their output and productivity is going down the pan.
3 months notice back to the office full time or sack the lot !

Record new day for migrants arriving on small boats today, 700 being reported, up from the previous high of 656 on Saturday.
What the hell are we allowing?

Another wank slogan that comes back to haunt a politician.

I get they need to get a message across, and sound bites are seen as the way to achieve that, but talk about painting yourself into a corner. Smashing organised crime is historically very difficult. And probably more difficult than ever today.

Just wish we’d have a leading politician who’d just talk straight, not like a fucking robot, and occasionally actually answer the fucking question.

Don’t even think he’s worse than the last three before him, because he’s absolutely not. Pitiful.

Indeed.
He wasn't wrong though, that statement would have stood the test of time had the referendum gone the other way.
What happened afterwards was entirely down to that lazy chancer Johnson and his tough talking do nothing Home Secretary Patel. Jenrick at least had the decency to resign when he realised he wasn't going to be allowed to do anything.
Back to today and the real irony is that the EU look far more likely to call time on this madness than we do.....

It was reported some months ago that Merz held talks with neighbouring states about this and physically blocking migration routes.
More for us I guess as those gangs just won't be smashed !

Racist German gammons!

That is an additional £27m that the government (the taxpayer) must now find.

It is certainly true that some areas of the civil service need to lift their game massively.

Once they are on boats there is not much we can do. When they are in French waters we are powerless, when they cross the line we are required to pick them up.
The answer lies in taking out the gangs that make a fortune putting them on boats. Calling the French authorities…..

I find it bizarre how some of the Tory boy/ reform posters in here pretend so hard that they are neutrals or lifelong labour voters.

It’s as bad as the sleepers who spent 14 years pretending to be socialists and decrying every Tory policy to now literally cheer lead stuff that would have had them frothing at the mouth not so long ago.

They refer to themselves as the “adults”.

It’s a funny old game is politics.

Not sure I recognise that category of people. The people who have always called themselves socialists despise Starmer as much as the ones who could never bring themselves to criticise the Tories and those who support Reform but pretend it’s just a protest vote.

Or quickly process their asylum claims, then either deport them or let them do the jobs that British people don’t want to do and take tax from them.

Do you think that system is working? What skills do these people have? Do you know what percentage go on full time work and what they actually contribute to the UK economy net?

If they are of benefit to our economy as you imply then why is the government trying to prevent them entering, why are France and other EU countries not just snapping them up?

Genuine questions as something doesn't seem to stack up?

The system certainly wasn’t working under the last government who seemed intent in politicising the problem by deliberately not dealing with it which created a huge backlog of people who weren’t allowed to work.

Early days for the new government but they do seem to be processing claims quicker. I have no idea what proportion of successful asylum claimants are in gainful employment paying taxes but it’s got to be more than it was when their asylum claims just weren’t being processed.

The fact that Eastern European migrant workers are no longer coming in significant numbers for seasonal farming and hospitality work suggests there’s certainly jobs out there that many could do.

When you ask what skills they have, it’s impossible to answer as they are all different, which is why they need to be processed quickly and either deported or allowed to work.
