Umm he was on a 4 year 555 million contract.

That's like 2.7 million per week.

More than our entire salary is now probably.
Yeah, that was never confirmed, although the reports were pretty confident.

I mean tho. Still better value than Coutinho, Umtiti, Alba, Coutinho. Messi is a one off. I'm not saying it was ok for him to take the money and it didn't help ruin Barca. But he had a claim on it. Commercial income and performance are light years ahead of anyone else.

The rest didn't have any claim on earning more than the top 20 performers in Europe's big leagues. At all. Twice Lewa's pay, three times Yaya / Sergio.

It is true tho that Atletico and Real made howlers in that period, Hazard, Jan Oblak. Still, Hazard was the prem's number one by most accounts. Bale was a galactico. The step above Lewa. Bayern got in a bit of a mess with Sane and others. Utd went nuts. But none of them were doing what Barca did, because it's not one deal, it was the sum total of the madness.

Coutinho - never a galactico. Never in a million years. A top 4 / elite CL player who was in rich form. There's dozens of them. And it's the timing, the massive increases, and the ages of the Barca renewals that adds to this. Busquets is the oldest man in football except Pepe, Alba, these guys were renewed on such incredible terms that took them right to the end of their careers.

You can see how Messi's failed move for free in 2020 brought down Bartolemeu - that's what I'm getting at. Barto was giving the money out to pay for his job. As soon as Messi wasn't seen as supportive, Barto was toast. Messi had a claim on the whole club, sporting, image, economics. He would have done anyway despite Barto being weak beyond belief.

Wonder if Inter Miami will sell a few Messi shirts now?
Would it be crazy for Inter Miami to have a blue & red striped shirt next season?!
LEAGUE owns the kit rights for EVERY TEAM…it’s ADIDAS.
Messi is an ADIDAS spokesperson…$$$$$$$$$
MLS is a franchise league. Beckham & Co own the Miami franchise and hav3 always needed some Latin stars to make the $$$. Viola!
Messi gets part of th3 franchise, as I believe Beckham arranged when he moved to MLS, although his deal was to allow him to BUY the Miami franchise for pennies on the dollar! Messi is getting a chunk of the Miami franchise.
Busquets & Messi reunion, Miami, MLS rolling out the red carpet, Inter Miami secondary market on ticket prices going through the roof, everyone banks coin!!

Great move for him, bag fulls of cash, free IPhones and Adidas gear for life and having your picture taken with Dave every minute, and all in the middle of a Hispanic enclave.

At the end of the day, the guy has been an absolute joy to watch for nearly two decades. Arguably the greatest ever player, and although still better than most, now past His peak. Can't begrudge him his move one bit (unlike that bitter club Barcelona), or whatever money or lifestile he and his family want. Wish him the best, and think no less of what he has done in the game.

Yes he's effectively retiring, and has gone for the big money and comfort, when he could have done a couple more years at the top level. I imagine after winning the world cup, and the way it ended at PSG, the hunger for winning things and pressure that tends to surround him is maybe replaced by just wanting an easier life with the family. Entirely his choice to make. The rest is just talk of those that want to idolise him, and some of the dismissal is more because of that than his choice.

He also spared everyone the total dragged out circus that this could have turned into, and that I like. Wish him all the best, pity won't get to watch much more of him, but others and a whole new audience will.

Incredible that at effectively 36 years of age you are deciding between a £billion euro contract for 2 years in Saudi and a 4 year god knows what contract in the MLS (Think he is getting a cut of the TV subscriptions for the league and league shirt sales from Adidas on top of his wages). Hard to imagine his profile getting any higher but with the World Cup in sight for North America he will be the face of promoting that which will earn him a substantial wedge from other sponsorships in the US market. Cannot fault him for taking what's on offer but it is all a bit mad (Remember when everyone was shocked at Shearers £10k a week wages and being in denial we were paying Kinkladze £6k per week).

By far the best player who's ever lived. Maradona mixed with De Bruyne mixed with Pele, and better than them all.

Glad he didn't go to the Saudi. Hope he scores goals for fun at Miami.
