The modern penalty

A new phrase that I'm sure will do the rounds, before I start, I think it was definitely a penalty yesterday, however mourinho imo is correct, slight contact in the box players are hitting the floor, V.A.R will take a look, slow it down, different angles then give the decision, but the problem when they slow it down and there is a slight contact then it's deemed a penalty, but the penalty should only be given if there is sufficient contact to bring players down ,
The penalty should not be awarded on the basis of 'contact'! The question should be "Has he been tripped, pushed, held, kicked, etc!" And the last three don't necessarily mean the player fouled ends up sprawling on the pitch. MANUre were the perpetrators of the modern form of cheating in the PL - feel contact so hit the deck, and for some it didn't need any contact. Which ref gave the pen for Ash the Crash going arse over tit without any contact and getting the defender sent off - think it was QPR! And summat like the 12th minute!

Mourinho can call it whatever he likes but clearly kicking a player in the box always was and always will be a penalty. He should probably ask a few of his players, Kane especially if he is OK after going down with minimal contact most of the game.

Mourinho was instrumental in creating the “modern penalty”. First with Porto, then Drogba at Chelsea, then the whole of Madrid etc.

Just as Klopp is instrumental in recreating it alongside screaming in an opposition striker’s ear when they are about to shoot.

VAR need to be able to give yellow cards out for diving and unsportsmanlike behaviour that have failed to be spotted by the onfield ref.

Absolutely correct.

As ever.....its only an issue when they need something to hide behind.

It’s not just penalties or “fouls” that the players are trying to con refs with, 20x in a game I see a player scream “OUR BALLLLL” for a throw in or corner knowing full well the last touch came off him. That is blatant cheating and nobody ever talks about it

A new phrase made up to divert attention away from how bad his team played ....... if you hadn’t watched the game and listened to him you would have thought Spurs where the better team ..... take away Kane’s shot and that was about it considering he sent out a team to attack ........ he should be grateful he got away with conceding 3

that's not new though is it, although tbf diving isn't new either. What is new is the interpretation of "touch" as "foul".

Whilst this myth is allowed to perpetrate by pundits, commentators and some fans, then it will not change. Only adverse publicity will bring about any change, and that starts with the likes of Sky and BT consistently calling divers out as cheats, and calling players going down at the slightest hint of a touch as cheats too.
