How much longer do you think such establishments have in mankind, there must come a point where the public realize no one is born above them.

We use to be a very religious country and that is slowly disappearing too with a lot of churches closing.

Forget the apparent wealth they bring in, and think of a reason why we should have a monarchy in the next 100 years? I can't think of one besides ''tradition''

Would selling all their assets help towards the deficit?

I can believe that!

The monarchy has served it's purpose now, I no longer see how it is relevant in the modern world besides visiting ill people shaking their hands and then rubbing it on the butler.

So if we whack all the royals, we have the added bonus of less fat, Hawaiian shirt-wearing, cheeseburger-eating Yanks over here?

Its win-win.

Read 'Royalty' by Jeremy Paxman, it's a great book about why people still put up with monarchies. In the growing absence of religion, people do find comfort in the 'higher being' status of a monarch. It makes us feel comfortable really.

The other choice is elected presidents, who wil do what they can to serve their own purposes. at least with monarchies they do what's right for the country, not always them. Cromwell overthrew the monarchy and replaced it with himself, and then wanted his son to take over....is that not a monarchy?!

For 60p a person, it's not that bad a service.

That might be the feeling at the moment but as mankind continues to change do you see it staying? I don't.

I'd finish it when Liz kicks the bucket. She's probably got another ten years so we'd all have time to get used to it.

The nonsense we had when the baby was born last year said it all. 'Future king' my arse!

It's 60p wasted for me.

We should fund the monarchy by voluntary subscription so those who want it can pay.

Why should we all be forced to chip in?

I think you make a strong point. Society, and the attitudes within it, have been subject to such change in the last generation, nothing is sacred.

It'll take at least a generation though. You'll probably sees attitudes discernibly shift when the Queen dies and Charles become King. There's no way he'll be nearly as well regarded as his mother.
