Nil by mouth was fucking brutally realistic. You never really get true dialogue in a film but thats as close as it gets. The violence was very disturbing.

I watched that on a plane fuck me it didn’t get my holiday off to a good start, utterly depressing film and like you say nothing has changed.

What a film to put on for a plane. Better than showing Alive though I suppose or Final destination

Watched the elephant man when I was about 14, couldn't get it out of my head for weeks.

Elephant Man what a film, I am John Merrick very pleased to meet you and I am not an animal, have always stuck with me and I saw that as a teenager. Heartbreaking and beautiful film.

There was a Turkish film called Uzak I remember watching many years ago, released around the turn of this century.
Nothing much happens in it, but it's fucking bleak and grim.
The winter setting in Istanbul really captures the mood of the film; it won loads of awards but it's definitely not some life-affirming romp.
Also, I'm sure I read one of the main actors in it died soon after in a car crash, just to compound everything.

Another shout for Snowtown as well, and an honourable for The Woodsman featuring Kevin Bacon.

Deliverance is relentlessly downbeat and no happy ending

Those two might be depressing in their message but I love them both and would watch them time after time. Gripping, exciting stuff.

Whereas there are a number of films mentioned, Serbian Film, Nil by Mouth and a few others that I would not wish to be anywhere near ever again.

I would suggest Midnight Express, the green mile and the original Get Carter.

Depressing doesnt mean bad imo, Kes for example, great but deffo depressing in parts.
