The New European Elite

I think I'm right in saying that since the group of 14 clubs was formed in 2000 only one club that was not a member (Chelsea) has won it. If Ajax get through that'll remain the same before the final is even played. So I don't see much difference in how it's working out. In the 18 year prior to that 5 clubs outside that group won it. Seems to be working efficiently to me.

Yup. But when two of the three English G14 teams fail to qualify as the rags and Arse have done, you can bet your bottom dollar there's backroom deals, bans and amendments to the qualifying criteria being worked on as we speak.

You are looking at this from the wrong angle. The CL is a bloated cash cow driven by the needs of the hierarchy to reap as much cash as possible. For it to be a proper competition it should be for the WINNERS of the respective leagues only. This will reduce the amount of games, meaning the PL would not need to accommodate it, it will be just Europe's top clubs, which will then generate more interest from sponsors and fans alike and it will be a true reflection of the game as a whole.

Chuck them all in a hat, draw them out, 2 legs, winners moves on. Sorted.

It can then be marketed properly.

I've highlighted a small bit. This is nonsense. Utter nonsense. You are devaluing the PL which should remain untouched. It is the greatest league in the world at the moment. Any club can beat any other club. What happens next season if a resurgent Leicester or Everton are in 5th and 6th place? Not in Europe but a weekend off? Arsenal in 7th get to play? Even though they are in Europe?

If they want to do it properly they should go back to having 1 competition for the winners, 1 for the cup winners and 1 for the next few in each league.

Defined. No bleeding into other competitions. Once out you are out.

This will then give anyone finishing 2nd-4th an incentive for the following season. Go for first. Don't think top 4 is enough. Go for it.
That's just a pipe dream. Far too fair and logical, but does not spin as much money for G clubs.
Not happening.

Glad it's not going to happen. No way should CL be devalued with few top teams (probably around 6 great teams and rest all dross if just the winners participate).

Devalued?

It would be a better competition. Just the winners from each country. Rather then the shite that's chucked in there at the moment to fill up the spots. There are also a lot of dead rubbers. A knock out would eradicate that in one foul swoop.

3/4 semi-finalists this time out wouldn’t have qualified under your suggestion. How would the competition be better if it were missing its best teams?

Not against the straight knockout part, by the way. Just the league champions only part, if you want a stronger competition

Until the PL treats the CL teams with the respect they deserve for representing the League in Europe, then it will be hard.

After the Group Stages, CL teams’ domestic games prior to a CL game should be on Friday night or early Sat, with the following game being a Sunday game.

In addition, the CL dates are known well in advance, so there should be ZERO TOP 6 games on the weekends before or after CL games.

If the PL (and SKY and BT) treated the League (and more importantly, the clubs and players) that lays their golden eggs with the respect they deserve, then we might see more and more PL teams in the latter stages.

Greed is driving the top teams into having to play 60+ games per season (many against the other top teams at the least opportune time) but not the greed of the clubs, the greed of the companies that feed off their success!

cant pick and choose fixtures to suit those around certain dates of the year

The Ajax manager put his finger on it when Pocchy moaned about how unfair it was for the Eredivisie to cancel all fixtures and allow Ajax substantial preparation time compared to Haringey, and highlighted the twenty-fold amount of TV money that PL teams get compared to Dutch teams.

Is he still the AJAX Manager then?

Watch this space....we will be calling him the Barcelona Manager soon haha ;)

With you on this, it became devalued when 2nd, third and fourth could compete in a champions compertition. Guess i'm missing something, ah greed.

I wouldn't have called Spurs or Barca the best teams in this competition.
