The obssession with zonal marking

BUMP.

Pellegrini seems to have switched us to man marking.

The problem yesterday, we seemed to be watching the man too much instead of the ball (in Zaba's case).

Do people prefer Zonal or Man-Marking defending for City? Personally think I'll have to give it more time before I decide.

Or is it just a case that our players are poor at defending set-pieces full stop?

I imagine that he switched us to man marking because he hasn't had time to coach his own organisational setup for the zonal system and we had a makeshift defensive pairing who couldn't be trusted to organisae it themselves.

We'll be back to zonal in a month.

When Mancini first arrived and switched from man to man to zonal there was a vast improvement in our defending of set pieces almost immediately and without any change in personnel.

So zonal can work. Its just that when you concede goals it looks really awful and the system gets the blame. Concede goals playing man to man and its the player that gets the blame.

-- Mon Aug 26, 2013 1:26 pm --

When Mancini first arrived and switched from man to man to zonal there was a vast improvement in our defending of set pieces almost immediately and without any change in personnel.

I can't believe more hasn't been made of the fact that we conceded two goals from corners yesterday, using man-to-man marking.

I hate man-to-man marking!

Without a doubt, Hart would have claimed the cross for their 2nd goal yesterday, had we been marking zonally, as the 6-yard box would have been half as populated and crowded as it was. I'd wager that their 3rd goal would have been prevented as well, with key defensive headers of the ball in better positions to attack the ball and beat an attacker in a dangerous area.

BRING BACK ZONAL!!

Why are we even on about this again ? We have had the meanest defence for last 3 seasons.

Probably because we conceded two terrible goals from corners, having just changed our system for defending corners.

Well we have changed wholesale to Man-for-Man marking. That's a bit of a problem yesterday when Zab (No 5) gets done twice at two corners by the same player. But hey.
Incidentally Mancini mainly played a mix of the two. Mostly zonal but with two players normally assigned to pick up the best headers of the ball from the opposition.

Zabaleta:

‘Two goals from set pieces for us is hard,’ said the 28-year-old. ‘It has changed for us as last season we were marking zonally and now it is individual marking and sometimes it is hard.

‘But Campbell was very strong in the air. They did well defensively and closed the space well and didn’t give us the chance to create many opportunities. We didn’t defend well at set pieces and it cost us the game.’”

I dont think it is zonal marking or man marking problem...

If we use the same zonal marking, and for example Lescott doest jump up when he sees the ball and opponent is coming like he did vs. Ajax the goal will be conceded no matter what the fuck system is used at corners.

The same now. Zabba did what actually? He had to keep Campbell away from heading the ball. And he didnt even give him a hard time to do it.

If its zonal marking and tha ball comes into that zone and the player responsible for that zone acts like Zabba did we concede the same goals...
