The official EDS and academy thread 2011/12

What does everyone think will happen to Players like Gai Assullin who are to old to play in the Next Gen Series, will they be loaned out or stay for league cup games.

Well, Palace wanted Assulin and Guidetti on loan but neither move has been sanctioned.

To me, a fully fit Assulin could be in the first team squad, he is no baby at 20, he was highly thought of at Barca and was called up to the first team squad in 2009/2010, though only started in the cup at that time. Nor do I think he was signed with any intention but for him to be in first team reckoning, but he has been unlucky with injuries.

But Mancini will decide and a loan is possible, if so hopefully to a good team.

Good luck to the young lads tomorrow in their first league game against Coventry.

After completing a successful pre-season programme that included a trip to Germany, City’s Academy are back in action on Saturday in the Premier Academy League.
For the second year running, the Boys Blue competed in a tournament in Oberndorf as part of a competitive build-up to the season. Although they reached the final, City were beaten on penalties after a 1-1 draw. They also participated in a number of friendly games, with Honved of Hungary and Rhyl being the most recent.

Changes have been made to the Platt Lane set-up over the summer period, with Scott Sellars taking up the new role of Head of Coaching for the Academy and Adam Sadler brought in as the new Under 18’s coach. The pre-season has been very encouraging and important in the development of the young scholars. Mark Allen, the Head of the Academy, was delighted with the successful preparations for the upcoming campaign.

“It was a very successful trip,” he stated. “We like to get the boys together for a focused 10-12 days where we can concentrate on getting them back to full fitness and engaged in a few friendly games to get them back in the spirit and the run of competitive football. We like to then finish with more of a competitive tournament which took us back to Oberndorf in Germany for the second summer running.

“It went really well. It was a very productive trip and, although the whole squad played well, certain players were singled out for praise. Adam Drury won the golden boot of the tournament and Alex Henshall won the player of the tournament for his outstanding displays. City were also given an award for being the most attractive and entertaining team which is always a nice accolade to get. On the whole it was very successful and offered us the ideal preparation for the upcoming season.”

“We continued our warm-up with a friendly against Hungarian side Honved. The lads played some superb attacking football and we ran out 4-1 winners. We finished our pre-season ventures at Rhyl. It was a really competitive match and it was great for the boys to play in a stadium environment. We won, 1-0 with Devante Cole scoring the only goal, but we always felt in control of the game. The match was a great chance for us to experience a final run-out in readiness for our game against Coventry in the Academy League on Saturday August 20. I’d like to extend a big thanks to the officials and players at Rhyl for their hospitality.

“We haven’t played Coventry in the League programme for some years as they aren’t in our region. The way the League works is we get two travel trips a year, one home and one away, so this goes down as one of our travel trips along with the home game against Ipswich Town. It will be a tough encounter, Coventry are always very competitive so we’re expecting a tough game. Like all things, when the season kicks off everything is equal and everybody will probably be at their fittest and raring to go. We’re expecting a difficult game but the preparations have gone well and we’re hoping we can carry that pre-season form into the season to get us off to a successful start.”

Allen was also keen to stress the opportunities that lie in front of the Academy scholars, with integration and progress with the Elite Development Squad a priority.

“A number of players this year have experienced some success already and been up with Andy Welsh’s EDS,” Allen said. “We’re looking to integrate the two departments in a much better way this season. You’ll see a lot of the Academy boys going up to Carrington on a day-to-day basis to integrate with the EDS squad. As we progress in the tournaments, whether they be under 19, under 18 or even the Youth Cup competitions, there will be a pool of players who will be a part of the Platt Lane and EDS set-up mixing and matching over that period of time.”

KENNEDY THE HERO FOR CITY U18

Kieran Kennedy's late goal ensured City’s U18s enjoyed a winning start to the 2011/12 campaign after a thrilling 4-3 away win to Coventry City.

The young Blues couldn’t have wished for a better start, with Devante Cole putting City ahead just 30 seconds into the game.
City then doubled their lead when Emyr Huws converted a penalty, but a spot-kick at the other end allowed Coventry to pull a goal back on the brink of half time.

The Blues fired back after the interval with in-form 17 year-old midfielder Alex Henshall finding the net. But the home side piled pressure on and, after scoring again, managed to find an equaliser to make it 3-3.

Despite the equaliser, City remained determined and resolute to control the final 10 minutes. The visitors managed to find the winner with the last kick of the game through England youth star Kieran Kennedy.

Head of Academy Mark Allen said: “It was a pleasing start and an exciting game. However we are looking for a more consistent performance. We were good in patches but we need to be good for the whole game.”

I think that U19 will play in the next gen series, with Razak, Suarez and Veseli occasionaly popping up in the first team squad.

Guidetti, Nimely and Bunn loaned out

Chantler and Mancini (unlikely) Sold

Assulin, Cunningham and Scapuzzi join first team.

I still think it was a bad idea leaving the reserve league, players like Razak, saurez, assulin etc will get around 10 competitive games before January surely thats not enough.

Germany U18 goalkeeper Loris Karius is set to leave City to join Mainz 05 according to Bild in Germany (courtesy of dan_bu on Twitter).

Anyone remember the fuss when we signed him as a 15-year-old in 2009 as allegedly 2/3 of Premier League clubs wanted him? I'm not sure what has gone wrong to make us sell him but I'd guess his injuries stunted his development - that or we've gotten a good cash offer.

Eirik Johansen will become our top young goalkeeper now then it seems, followed by new signing Angus Gunn who is a few years younger.

Just looking at the academy team that beat Ipswich and while it is hard to spot an Englishman in our EDS side at the moment besides Meppen-Walters due to Bunn and Wabara being injured, if I'm not mistaken every single player involved against Ipswich was English (unless one is Irish or something?) and every player in the matchday squad was except maybe El-Fitori who I know nothing about. If Albert Rusnak was playing that would've been different but don't know where he is.

Manchester City:
Gunn, Coulsen, Kennedy, Plummer (Swan, 72), Leigh (Smith-Brown, 80), Clowes, King, Drury, Henshall (McHale, 83), Glendon, Hiwula,

Unused subs:
El-Fitori, O’Brien

OS Report

Two goals from Jordy Hiwula helped City’s U18s beat Ipswich Town 3-1 to a confident victory in the Barclays Premier Academy League.
For the first 20 minutes the Blues struggled to get into the game at Platt Lane, with 17 year-old Paul Clowes having a penalty saved after Adam Drury was fouled.

Both sides struggled to find their cutting edge to take the lead and the score remained goal-less at half time, despite City dominating possession.

The young Blues continued to press after the break and their determination eventually reaped rewards, with 16 year-old Jordy Hiwule giving City the lead. The visitors responded with an equaliser moments later before Hiwula made it two, firing in his second goal. City rallied and thoroughly deserved the victory, with George King sealing the win with the third goal.

The Blues’ triumph made it two successive wins in a row, keeping up their 100% record in the League. Head of Academy Mark Allan remained wary of the fact it was still early days in the season but admitted he was delighted with the performance.

“It’s definitely a pleasing start,” Allan said. “It’s still very much early doors but it’s always good to get off to a great start. It’s very satisfying that we’ve registered two wins. We’ve got the momentum behind us now so hopefully we can use that and really push on throughout the season.”

Loris Karius has joined Mainz 05 but not on a permanent deal (at this stage at least) as thought, but rather a six-month loan.

The Elite Development Squad play their final friendly game tonight at Hyde as a prelude to the exciting NextGen Series next month.
After the young Blues’ emphatic 3-0 victory against Oldham Athletic in the Manchester Senior Cup, City face Burnley at Ewen Fields this evening. Coach Andy Welsh will be looking to field a strong side in preparation for the visit of Barcelona in the opening NextGen Series fixture on 15 September.

Striker Harry Bunn is back in the squad alongside the promising Gai Assulin and Denis Suarez, as well as Welsh handing opportunities to a selection of Academy starlets to impress. It’s an ideal chance for supporters to catch a glimpse of the young talent on display and to get behind the Blues.

Kick off is at 7pm, entrance is £3 for adults and £1 for concessions with 5 loyalty points awarded for attending the fixture.

Please note that access to Ewen Fields this evening is via Mansfield Road/Grange Road North, left at the roundabout and then right into the ground. Fans are urged to avoid Lumm Road as there is no access to Walker Lane from that direction. Walker Lane is closed just before Hyde Leisure Pool for road works

Chantler has reappeared today for the EDS, I was wondering where he is as many of his generation have moved on now. 'arry Bunn is back too but unfortunately Mancini Jr. plays.

Johansen, Facey, Chantler, Razak, Rekik, Meppen-Walter, Roman, Scapuzzi, Bunn, Mancini, Assulin
Subs: Bennati, Halsall, Suarez, Robinson, Plummer, Elabdellaoui
