The Only Way Is Harpurhey!

Sighthill Walk, heading to the local shop all boarded up with steel mesh, anti vandal paint and barbed wire, the memories of visiting my nana are flooding back.

Looking forward to it.

My ex mother in law had her car nicked outside Christ Church one Sunday morning........
The next thing is, this scrote (on seeing the ex mother / father in law at the exact spot they left the car that was no longer there...) approaches ex mother in law and claims he saw who stole the car and knows him and if he gave him their phone number, he'll try and get it back for her.
An hour later, she gets a call from the scrote saying ''yes, I've located the car..... will there be a reward?'''
So the ex mother in law gets a lift to the Ark Royal car park, hands over 30 notes and is reunited with her car...... (and has to pay for a new door lock that was damaged)

I lived down there for a while in the 90's.
Salt of the earth most people. Bad apples but that's
like anywhere i've ever lived.
I've never lived in Didsbury though so that
may explain it.

Tanned toned bodies, glamorous models and posh nightclubs could be making their way north – as Manchester’s answer to the hit TV show TOWIE.
TV bosses are making a new fly-on-the-wall drama, following residents and community leaders as they go about their lives for the next six months. And it is more likely to be a few pints in the Embassy, sun-starved bodies and your typical northern lass that feature in the Harpurhey version.
Called The Estate, the documentary will air on digital channel BBC3 in the summer. It will be made by Dragonfly TV, the company behind reality shows One Born Every Minute, The Hotel and Kill It, Cook It, Eat It. The show will focus on the ward as a whole, but will concentrate on the estate around the Shiredale pub.
Cameras will follow around 20 residents, including the Rev Mike McGurk, vicar at Christ Church on Rochdale Road. Filmmakers have already been to Sunday service at the church and Mike says he is keen to show the area in a positive light. He said: "I am a member of the Harpurhey community and it’s part of the role of the parish priest to be involved in that community. "The indices of deprivation and the statistics don’t lie – there is a lot of poverty here and it is one of the most deprived parts of the country. "But one of the things I’m keen to show is that there is a lot of hope in this community. "There are great people who live in this estate and as a church that’s been here for 183 years, there’s a lot we can do to show the area in a positive light."
Councillor Pat Karney, ward councillor for Harpurhey, said: "This show will put Harpurhey on the map. "We get a lot of negative press, but I think this will prove that this area is full of good, honest people. "We all know this but I think it will prove to the rest of the country what we already know. "So forget Essex – the only way is Harpurhey."

You actually have to almost admire the naivity of them really. The Reverend you can understand but does the councillor really belive that a documentary like this is going to be produced to 'show the area in a positive light'? It will be edited and produced to show the area as a real life shameless and will no doubt be promoted as such. I give it less than 24 hours from the show being first aired before Carney is all over the media complaining that the area has been unfairly protrayed and that it isnt really like as has been shown in the programme.

Good way of getting funding for the area. Might be method in his madness .

Individuals like pat carney deserving recognition???? Don't make me laugh!

No offence mate, as you do say that you've been out of the area for some years, but from personal experience I can vouch that carney is a waste of space on the council and totally self serving - it's all about what goes in his pocket! I'm really sorry if I'm dashing anyones hope here but if he's involved in this debarcle then it's for his own self promotion and nothing to do with the interests of the people of harpurhey.

Went to st matthews lower school and lots of the kids were from the area,we also went on the market at dinner time(10p bag of broken biscuits from the indoor, those were the days)harpurhey is like any other north manchester inner city suberb,a shithole that the council dont care about, the older people are all mostly nice genuine people but the young kids have no respect and just want to be local gangsters, this program will make the genuine people of harpurhey look like complete dicks, its a pisstake of the people from the area and why they cannot see that is crazy,it will be cringe viewing tv,i use to go in the con club with my grandad every sunday and have really fond memories of the area even before asda was built,i hope it portrays the people in a genuine light and that the people in the program dont make the people of all manchesters inner city suberb residents look like prats and hot just the people of harpurhey,is there a date released yet for when its shown on tv??

Welcome to Bluemoon, what a depressing first post though.
Not all the kids in Harpurhey want to be gangsters. I have couple of teen nephews who have lived within 5 minutes walk of the Con club all their lives.
One is 18 this year and hopes to go to Uni and the other is a great 14 year old.
My mum and dad live on Church Lane and walk to Asda's most days.
