The Positives Thread 2019/20

It's good news but that tells us something which we didn't know? I mean, does it imply he will come back earlier than planned? I'm not sure.

Good news though. We are missing him a lot. He will need a month to hit form, so hopefully he will be back to his best for the 2nd leg in the last 16 in the CL.
It tells us where he is in his recovery and moving out onto the pitches is huge. Grass is an unstable surface.

Players can say they hope to be back by Jan/Feb but I always prefer to see evidence rather than words.

As an antidote to the election nonsense I have been looking at City’s season in stats. I know that some people pay them no heed but I though I’d see if we were doing as badly as it seems. I have compared the stats with Livarpool and Leicester as well as the rags.
Shots: City 337, LFC 258, LCFC 240, MUFC 224. I will keep the following numbers in that order, with City first and utd 4th.
On target: 112, 102, 87, 86 (City 1st)
Hit woodwork: 12, 4, 4, 7 (City 1st)
Crosses: 457, 373, 337, 286 (City 1st)
Corners: 150, 96, 107, 91 (City 1st)
Big chances missed: 40, 30, 25, 22 (City 1st)

Offsides: 40, 21, 27, 22 (City 1st)
Yellow cards: 31, 16, 17, 34 (LFC and LCFC bottom 2)
Clean sheets: 5, 3, 7, 2

All this seems to suggest that all is not quite as bad as we are making out and that a better shot conversion and a basic way of scoring from corners would have seen us right up there. Cheered me up a bit anyway.......

Thanks for posting that. It confirms what I was saying in the Pep rebuilding thread: we create more chances than the rivals but are less clinical than them. And hitting the woodwork thrice as many times as the rivals shows we have been somewhat unlucky as well.

Suggests that offensively City are the best.

Defensively I am sure you'd find big holes.

My positive from yesterday would be the quality of Mendy's crosses. They were exceptionally good.

Helped of course by having so much space. However this was comfortably the best game Mendy has had. That game made me think there is life in him yet.

VAR is changing in the Summer. See Ceferin's comments that have been widely reported.

It is always about fine margins. We have only slipped a bit but it has hurt us a lot. It's funny how the narrative changes purely on the score not the actual performance. On another day Chelsea could have beaten us by three or four goals and we should have put five past Newcastle. There was little difference in our performances in both those games. United hammered us for 30 minutes but we should still have got a draw based on the second half. I think the players are just mentally tired. Bernardo and Raheem in particular have just played too many games in the last 18 months at club and international level. Burn-out is a big issue in the modern game. Last season was an epic performance but it has taken a lot out of us (fans included!)
good summary, last sentence sums up the season so far

Yes. I honestly thought his top-level career was over after those two horrendous injuries (and it still might be) but last night in the second half Mendy started firing in those hard low crosses that he did when he first came. He also made a great recovery run and tackle to stop an attack for the first time since his comeback. If he can keep progressing like this then we could be back on track with Zinchenko also coming back to help bolster the left side of our defence. We can probably only judge Mendy after six months.

Only 112 on target from 337 shots could be improved on though, it's a lower percentage on target than the scouser's 102 from just 258 shots. More shooting practice needed.

And we're caught offside far too often.

I think it's the big chances missed that's screwing us. Really need to be more clinical, then even allowing for defensive errors we probably score enough to win most games.

Mendy has quality. Last night was a reminder. My concern would be his speed. I remember the recovery run he made. I agree let's give him time.

The crosses and corners stats suggest we would do well with a tall striker. Thanks for those stats. It's good to know we're sticking to our principles. In fact Pep should show these to the players to give them confidence. Many factors seem to be affecting our season so far, injuries, coward refs, VAR, brain farts and resolute defending from the opposition. We can still turn our season around by converting more of our chances.

This is the positive thread you know ;-)

Marvin's a major contributor to that one as well.

;-)
Except I am usually arguing against the pissed-off's arguments.

The league season has been disappointing to date. In the Summer, Maguire's transfer split opinion. Few were that excited about him. We knew we needed to replace Kompany but few were convinced at Maguire at over £80m.

Within weeks of the new season we lost Laporte, Stones has been in and out, and we lost ZInchenko too. Anything that could go wrong did go wrong.

The positive is that Foden has continued to shine, and Rodri looks like he is a very talented player. He is a different type of player to Fernandinho. He doesn't have Fernadinho's energy (when he was young which is a big problem if your midfield partners are Gundogan and David SIlva). The result has been that we have a defence that can not defend one on one and we have a mdfield that can look pedestrian.

Jesus has also been a positive. AGuero remains the main man, but even in a troubled season for City, Jesus has shown that he is a world class player. THe quality of his goals at Burnley and Zagreb spoke volumes. We know that when Aguero's time is up, Jesus will be able to step up so that has been a plus point that developed out of injury to AGuero. Another player came in and took his opportunity.

The positive for me is that the defence is fundamentally sound when players are fit. We need as a club to decide now whether we put our faith in Laporte and Stones, and Garcia and Harwood Bellis. Next season those two will be 19 and 18 and perhaps they will be ready to cover in the event of injury. Stones really needs to step up. His problem is that he can't play more than 3-4 games without picking up an injury.

For me if Laporte returns and you bring in Foden for Silva then City will be a formidable unit. I am expecting City to be strong in 2020. The main concern for me would be John Stones. I know he has the ability but he has to show it this season, and of course right now he is injured again so once more City are without both first-choice central defenders.

Not a bad reply to my smiley face!

I just wanted to restate some things as when I venture beyond Bluemoon I get the feeling that other fans think City are done. We aren't. We've played 16 league games and in that time our two main central defenders have played 10 games between them.

I agree with all of this and especially what you say abut Stones. I have always supported him but he seems to be just too injury-prone. I would go all out to try and get Soyuncu from Leicester. He is much better than Harry Maguire and would be great for us. We also need a left back though. Zinchenko has been sensational in centre midfield for Ukraine. He can play the defensive role, box to box, and even at number 10. I watched a couple of games, especially the Euro decider against Portgual and Zin looked as good as Kante for tackling and KDB for playing killer passes.

The way things have gone in the league, to have two legged ties against United and Real Madrid has really got the juices flowing again. Those two draws are exactly what this season needed imo.

Jesus, Foden and Mahrez who were on the fringe are going to get games.

Thought mahrez played well at Oxford and Jesus and Foden have also done well in recent weeks. Bodes well for the hectic period ahead of us.
