This will no doubt bring out the usual haters, but The Smiths are joined by the likes of Deep Purple, Chaka Khan, Nine Inch Nails, Cheap Trick and Janet Jackson in the nominations.

Whilst I would question the general knowledge of many Floridian residents, I think that fact is even more to the credit of the band that they have been nominated - all of the others nominated were known around the western globe at the time they were at their peak. The Smiths attained a small cult status (outside the UK) back then and that has grown (unusual for a band that didn't have a front man who died!) and the band have had an influence on many, many other bands throughout the past 30 years.
I doubt they will win and in a way hope they dont..... The Smiths were the antithesis of such an institution as the HOF and hope if selected a statement goes out similar to Johnny Rotten / Lydon's comment when the Sex Pistols were inducted.
