The striker situation

we need a 4th striker, we always did. if we let this window pass us by it will come back to haunt us.

Or it wont.

it has already. the beast should have been replaced before we agreed to let him go. now this.

And how would we have done that?

Accounts reveal our net transfer spend left us with approx 10m as Mangala was actually much more then what was published we paid for him.

You tell me who we could have got for 10m?

FFS - Shane Long went for 12m this past window.

We either tried to get a young english talent (Berahino or Jay Rodriguez) although I doubt we would have been able to due to the English premium.

Or we try and attract someone foreign at about the same level as Negredo, but with the added complication of the fact that they wouldn't be able to make our CL squad as we don't have the room. Not much of an incentive to join.

Who would we be able to get, with limited funds, limited CL experience to give them who would be a requisite standard and who would be happy being 4th choice would we have realistically been able to get?

The facts are we cannot sign anyone until January (unless Ihenacho gets a WP granted - not holding my breath on that one) so regardless we have to get through these next few weeks. with what we've got. By the time January comes around then mostly likely two of Jovetic, Dzeko and Aguero should be back fit.

I'd just play some of the youngsters like Ambrose. If we can't take a fair few points with the squad that we have and the fixture list that are in front of us until January then we don't deserve to be Champions.

???

Mate the following is an excerpt from the annual report.

Since the year-end the football registrations of Fernando (from FC Porto), Eliaquim Mangala (from FC Porto), Wilfredo Caballero (from Malaga), Bruno Zuculini (from Racing Club), Frank Lampard and Bacary Sagna have been acquired. The registrations of Javier Garcia (to Shakhtar Donetsk), Jack Rodwell (to Sunderland) and Emyr Huws (to Wigan Athletic) were sold. The net expenditure on these transactions was approximately £38.8m.

We had a 50mil cap, our net spend was 39m - we only had 11 to buy our supposed 4th striker.

What has been speculated is that Mangala was much more than 32m as quoted - closer to 40m which means we didn't have as much as we thought we did.

Navas for striker

Only starting a thread about it because not seen this option mentioned elsewhere.

What we're missing from Sergio's absence is his burst of pace and his ability to occupy both centre-backs. Also of course his finishing.

Well Navas certainly has the pace. And merely the threat of that will have Dann and Hangeland on constant guard for the 90 this Sat. Lastly, even his detractors have to admit he's not a bad finisher.

Just a bit perplexed why his name hasnt been put into the mix to be our stand-in striker this month.

Re: Navas for striker

That option would leave us with no striker and no wingers, if we're not going to have an available spearhead than we definitely need his pace out wide, I'd rather use Pozo or Nasri, Pozo won't be missed elsewhere on the pitch as he's not a starting Xi player and Nasri won't be missed in AM with Silva playing.

Re: Navas for striker

Whoever is picked it will not be about their goalscoring ability. It will be about how well they can play with their back to goal, hold the ball, set up our attacking midfielders. A goal would be a very big bonus.

I think Nasri is easily the best player suited to the role. But its more important to come up with a system that maximises our overall attacking threat rather than just focusing on that one position. No doubt they'll be experimenting with a number of permutations this week to see which works best.

We should only sign a striker in January if we would have signed that player if Aguero, Dzeko and Jovetic were all fit. Unless its a Lampard type freebie

Re: Navas for striker

The best option at the moment is Pozo as striker if the usual aren't available. No point in attempting to rebalance, or unbalance, the side by moving players into unfamiliar positions. One goal from Pozo and the lad will be firing! Also, give him some fuckin' service!
