A comment on the Lady Gaga thread has had me wondering, what is the ultimate pop song?
Now, there will obviously be debates about what constitutes 'pop' music. For the purpose of this debate I'll say it has to be a song with broad appeal though I won't say it had to chart highly.
Most pop music is about love. Falling in love, breaking up, moving on etc. All regular themes. So my ultimate pop song has to be about love in some way.
But I don't think it ought to be something that requires much thought. Leave the prophesy and social commentary to rock stars. It should be an easy breezy bust of music.
The Beatles are widely regarded as the greatest band of all time. Though some of their records wouldn't fit in with my personal definitions of a 'pop' track you'd still be pushed to pick just one song within the parameters.
But I have made my choice; She Loves You. It's perfect. Just two and a half minutes long, catchy, light and simple. Sheer magnificence. Doesn't need loads of production or a fancy video.
