The "which famous person died today" thread

Brian Glanville - one of the great football writers of the 20th Century

A great writer. In the days when I bought the Sunday Times, his was the first football story I turned to.
He could be very scathing when he saw injustice or stupidity.
He was not a fan of the Premier League calling it greedy and all about money.

When I was about 22 (1984) I was introduced to the Times and Sunday Times by older work colleagues. Brian Glanville and Hugh Mckilveny were a revelation to me. My old man only ever had the Mirror or the Sun. Could read their articles about sports and people I didn’t even like. When writing on really big games, fights, races, whatever they held me spellbound. Had bought a few books by them both for my Dad in his last few years and he lived then. Sad that he’s passed but he must have left a huge body of work and helped a few of us to appreciate better quality writing. Henry Winter has written a pretty good tribute today.

I remember in English we read his novel Goalkeepers Are Different. I think the teacher saw it as a way of engaging football mad students in reading more, and it probably worked.
You absolute bloody legend! I could remember reading a book about goalkeepers in the school library sometime around 75/76 and really enjoying it. Couldn't for the life of me remember the title. This was it!

Should probably be in the media thread but Henry Winter's tribute to one of the best football writer's of all time contained the following "highlight"

"When Bruno Fernandes joined Manchester United, Glanville wrote about what an inspirational signing he would turn out to be."
