For a town of its size there's very few famous people from there but George MacDonald Fraser who wrote the excellent "Flashman" series of novels is an exception.
The books featured the further adventures of the school bully from "Tom Brown's Schooldays" and was the inspiration for Lord Flashheart in Blackadder Goes Forth.
