Introduced to his work via Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead as an adjunct to studying Hamlet as a youngster and subsequently enjoyed lots of his work. Arcadia takes a couple of goes to get your head round but is an incredible piece of writing. One of our greatest ever playwrights. RIP.

Sad news and, again, someone who was influential particularly at STAX and yet goes under the radar until you see their achievements in their obituary.

I know it’s a tad morbid but I love this thread where it’s highlights people that you don’t appreciate until you realise it’s too late.

I would personally love, when I’m gone, to have done something so worthy of note that makes people say “.. that Sam Armstrong was the guy who did ..” just so your memory lives on. I’m trying to do my best in the years I have remaining to achieve that!!

I lost my Dad last year (another Sam Armstrong as was my Grandad) who was subsequently quietly cremated but gone and, other than family, forgotten despite him having been awarded a certificate for bravery as a kid in the 1950s for heroically and selflessly running into a burning house to try to rescue his little brother Jimmy who, despite my Dad’s best efforts, tragically died.

I guess, writing this, is my attempt to put his name out there to try and get some of the recognition and immortality he deserved alongside the celebrities on here. I still haven’t shed a tear for him as I’m still coming to terms with his death as I was unfortunately not able to be a real part of his funeral arrangements as he lived in Anglesey and other family members took over and I wasn’t particularly involved other than being at the service itself where I felt distanced from what was going on and never got to say my own goodbye.

I lost a real good friend this year too, John Chamberlain (Roadie To Nowhere), who suffered the same chronic kidney disease that my Dad did but who sadly died all alone from a massive heart attack and, again, like my Dad, I have guilt that I could have done more for them and still haven’t truly got to say my goodbye to either.

Sorry for the rant and self-pity but I hope that writing this will put their names out there.
