It seems that his 100% commitment is being criticised over in Holland. What do you guys think?

Agree with what the coach is saying in principle - our league is physical and at the WC a dodgy challenge may be seen differently by a ref, as a red instead of yellow.

But Nige has to be careful how he adapts - he's excellent at harrying and retrieving the ball and if toning down his approach means he loses his edge then he could suffer.

Personally, I'd like to see him concentrate a bit more on distributing the ball forward, but if one of our players has a reputation as a ferocious tackler then it could work both for and against us - players will be aware of it but so will refs. At the end of the day, he's still the same player who has been tackling like this for months if not years. Just unfortunate that this time the guy got it full on.

Agree with that point made though.

In a friendly!!!

Needs to be careful in these circunstances as he might needlessly hurt himself and then what would you all say!

That's players of Nige's ilk for you though. The game will always have them and is more the richer for them - if he was malicious then it would be different, but he isn't. He's just competitive in every game, every practice match, every kick around.

If he gets injured as a result of he style of play it would be terrible for him and us, but it's a risk we take.

I think Nigel could be a marked man with referees after this incident. Perhaps we should start him on the bench in the next couple of games if Mancini is insistent on playing Viera, to keep him out of the firing line until the dust settles a bit. The last thing we need at this stage of the season is another player getting a straight red and three-game ban and I think refs will now be looking closely and with a jaundiced eye at every challenge he makes
