No restaurant in Mayfair is paying minimum wage.Correct but places with a £210 set menu should never be paying minimum wage let alone less than that. If you can't afford to pay staff decent wages whilst running a restaurant in Mayfair, shut up shop and fuck off or put your hands in your own pocket until you can.
I wish I could go cash only. I'd lose half my business. All my bars are cash only… staff get very good tips :-)

Don’t worry, I don’t judge you; my dad used to pay me and my brother’s school fees in readies! He once told me that the school bursar never blinked once in all the occasions over about a decade he visited the school to square them up. Just counted it out in front of him, and thanked him when she’d finished (and it was correct!). Can you imagine that happening today?!
Tuppenceha’pennyWhat constitutes a healthy tip in Radcliffe now? Just getting things in order for next month.

Yes where the culture is to tip (USA, Canada, India etc) mainly because they get paid bugger all. Definitely not in parts of the far east as its seen as disrespectful.
As for mainland Europe and the UK it just depends on the service, its certainly not automatic for me but if they are friendly and seem to do a good job then yeah I leave a tip or at least round it up to the nearest reasonable number.
Fair enough I used to do that but speaking to my son and his friends who have been working in bars, no need because they get the whole service charge from the cards.I always remove it and give my server cash.
Won’t last forever but until I’m legally obliged to have card machines I’ll crack on.Don’t worry, I don’t judge you; my dad used to pay me and my brother’s school fees in readies! Know the Yang Sing had an HMRC audit a few years ago, because their cash as a percentage of overall sales was remarkably low for a Chinese restaurant. The daft cunts couldn’t see the wood for the trees!
That was approaching a decade ago, somewhat ironically the same year we voted to harm ourselves as a nation.Le Gavroche was paying less than minimum wage in 2016 (the date of the article) because they had staff doing extra unpaid work.
And as a further post of mine illustrated it ain’t necessarily so…Fair enough I used to do that but speaking to my son and his friends who have been working in bars, no need because they get the whole service charge from the cards.
Don’t know about your bars but if my coffee shop was cash only I d lose loads of business, nearly all my customers under 30 don’t carry any cash. All my bars are cash only… staff get very good tips :-)
Expats in Spain carry plenty…Don’t know about your bars but if my coffee shop was cash only I d lose loads of business, nearly all my customers under 30 don’t carry any cash.
I can confirm, professionally speaking, this is broadly correct...Expats in Spain carry plenty…
I trained to get into the catering industry and every place i looked for a job was the same; shit hours, shit pay. If i was a kid now i'd do McDonalds management training, much better paidCorrect but places with a £210 set menu should never be paying minimum wage let alone less than that. They wont do that (make you obliged legally). The banks will just remove all the cash machines and close local branchesWon’t last forever but until I’m legally obliged to have card machines I’ll crack on.
