Is apparently returning to City after a spell with NYCFC. Good move, as from what I've read, he was very good at growing the commercial side of the business at City.

Won't happen, NYCFC have already made the press aware that they've hired an executive recruitment agency to find someone so they clearly hadn't already earmarked someone. Besides, from everything I've ever heard, Cook is quite happy running the UFC - another interest that Abu Dhabi is putting money into, so clearly a UAE-sanctioned recruitment.

Unlikely, since he is apparently leaving the job to move into another role in Manchester. If he were a scapegoat, they'd just be firing him point blank, not giving him another cushy appointment.

Chances are it's one of two things: either he's asked to move back to Manchester (bear in mind that he is American, so it wouldn't be for personal reasons, only for his career) or, as spiny says, it's because he was hired to get things moving on the stadium deal and he's proved incapable of doing so.

Nothing - the season has almost ended for NYCFC - 2 games left with little chance of making the play offs.

Going to New York was a step down for him really.. He was head of CFM and worked from the CFG headquarters in London before.
At a guess he´ll soon be back doing the commercial marketing things while NYCFC hire some competent (hopefully) person to run the club.

Maybe nothing went wrong.

Maybe Tom was seconded to NYCFC for six months and was always due to come back to England in early October.
