Next James Bond?

Really really interesting opinions floated here.

There are stalwarts of 'tradition' and those who embrace change and there's quite a(excuse the pun) black and white issue about it.

Interesting that some have quite rightly pointed out that a good actor can make any role watchable, if the parameters allow it. 'M', for example, was never a woman before the shake up and now who actually bats an eye lid over the position?

In 'The Avengers' franchise, Nick Fury is Black due to the recent visage of the character, when in days gone by he has been a silver side haired, cigar chomping White man of thick build. Does anybody give a sh*t now?

Not that I know of.

Before this incarnation of Spidey hit the screens, there was a real thought of making him the newer alternate reality Spidey, Miles Morales...

Couldn't this kid from 'Attack the Block' play him?

My point is, most film is FICTIONAL is meant to be open to interpretation! It is only one person's vision that is brought to the screen, as to why we as a society, are hell bent on pigeon holing characters into certain roles.

I wonder how people felt about the all Black production of 'Julius Caesar' that was on recently...!!!

Here's my candidate for the next Shaft blockbuster soon as we are knocking down sterotypical barriers for fictional chracters.

Interesting how 'offended' you are.

Were you this angry when Obama became the 'leader of the Free World'???

He's got a point though. There would be outrage if they remade Shaft with Vic Reeves playing him.

Offended? Wow, you can deduce that from my post? Are you suggesting i am racist?

I take it then my suggestion offended you that a openly gay white man would be able to portray a character such as Shaft. But i am in no way suggesting you are Homophobic.

No, he hasn't "got a point" and I would lay claim to any Black person that felt in similar terms.

If THIS type of thought process is what you find "has a point" then why accept SOME change and not others?? It smacks of foolishness to 'accept' a Black president, unless you don't? Maybe there should be no women leaders or drivers or women with careers, full stop. And no voting!

No Irishmen, Blacks or dogs should be allowed in certain areas. I could go on, but I know how stupid people can be when it comes to change.

Perhaps you should ask yourself how 'liberal' you truly are, mmm??

Actually it pissed me off as I was always interested to see what he would look like in real life. Plus SLJ is far too shouty for the part, in fact I think he is a shit Fury regardless of race

Ian Fleming clearly wrote James Bond as a white man. His first Bond novel, Casino Royale, was published in 1952. Equality was a pipe dream, blacks couldn't even vote in America, let alone be considered the equal of a white man at that time. Bond spent a great deal of time in America, and in Eastern Europe, in Fleming's books. In the 1950's and 1960's a black man would have stood out like a sore thumb in a lot of these areas, and most certainly wouldn't have been able to perform the job of "spy" to any real degree. Plus Ian Fleming produced a sketch of his "vision" of James bond:-

Clearly a white man.

So, if we are to stick to Ian Fleming's original vision there is no room for a black actor to be considered for James Bond.

However, if we're talking about modernising the character, re-envisioning him for the 21st century, then there's no real reason why a black actor could not be considered for the part. As Elba says though, it would need to be on merit, and work within the confines of an established character. Simply making Bond black as a gimmick wouldn't work in the long or short run.

There's the difference. It would not bother me. A character is a character and as I said BEFORE if the role allowed within its parameters a type of character, then it's all fine with me.

The only thing I hold with your suggestion is that a role would have to be adapted to display the 'change' in a character if you wanted that role to be 'challenging'. I have no qualms with such a reflection.

I, however, am unsure what character adaptation a Black man would require to play 'Bond' who is, after all, mainly an action figure...
