I thought that, however, reading it again I assume he/she means that we will get beaten in the in the final so no CL trophy rather than the season overall

4th only sends us into a qualifier anyway, not the Champions League proper. So obviously I'd rather get to the final.

But losing the final doesn't get you into Europe.
Top 4 for me is a bare minimum anything in Europe is a bonus.

Well, being in a CL final means we are a Top top team that players would like to come to.

I meant financially. If we were counting on £50m extra profit from the CL that could, in theory, fund £250m of transfers. We could still do those but that would mean absorbing £50m of amortisation that first year on a lower income/profit base.

With the new PL TV deal, we'd probably be OK for that year but could hit a potential FFP problem if we then didn't qualify the following year as well.
