It switches on but goes straight to a faintly pixilated display, wont do anything else. Iv tried the battery in and out and had a look at the motherboard but cant see any obvious solder problems...Anyone ever come across this?

A number of times. It could be either your video drivers need reinstalling, or the graphics embedded on the mainboard is faulty, or the backlight or the TFT panel.

Can you output to an external monitor. Practically every laptop has a D-Sub connection which you should be able to connect to any standard TFT, or most modern TVs. If the display error is not replicated by doing that then it is the panel/backlight. If it is then it's the driver or the graphics chip. Driver is simple to fix, graphics = new laptop if a shop fixes it which will be the case unless you find the correct part on ebay, and then you can strip down the laptop and put it all back together again. Peace of piss if you do it every day, ballache if you haven't and you follow a youtube clip guide on how to!

Take it to geeksquad i know the test for free in the usa, well they did for me. This will tell you if it is the screen, if it is not then it is the gpu and you may as well get a new lappy as repairing it is not worth it. On my old hp i think i was quoted 800 dollars to sort it.
