Toyota Australia Hands back $18 million

I just can't decide wether to applaud Toyota or be cynical and say this is nothing more than a publicity stunt.

Toyota was using the Australian Government's wage subsidy during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, but the company ended 2020 with record sales.

Well it might be a publicity stunt, but it's also the right thing to do, so fair play to them. That money was put aside to help struggling companies through the pandemic, so a company that made record profits over the year clearly didn't need it long term, even if they needed it to deal with cash flow problems at the time.

To be fair, at the time I said that companies that make things like cars, electronics, etc, are less likely to be affected, because people will just delay purchases of those items rather than not buying them entirely. Although you'd still expect a slight decrease simply because of job losses.

This is the type of thing that will help keep capitalism a success.

Responsibility and doing the right thing in business should be paramount.
