Follow his instructions, as the Renfe site can be a bit tricky.

We went from Madrid to Valencia on the high speed AVE train and it was superb.

They are not cheap!

They do have offers, but you need to be quick. Think they go on sale 60 days in advance.

We booked a table of 4 (for 3 people), which was cheaper than 3 singles.

RENFE are your people.Fortunately the trains are some of the things that work over here. They are good, well priced (400km return journey €24.00),clean and punctual.Tickets can,on some lines anyway,be bought from the guard on the train.
Weird thing is you may have to change or buy separate tickets as you will be entering Catalonia, which as we all know is not 'Spain'.......seriously
