Was there actually a Tranmere fan in Coronation Street who died in a tram disaster?

I don't watch it and never have but there was a very popular joke at the time about Coronation Street, it concerned a tram wreck on the show during the last couple decades.
If it didn't involved the character/actor name in the show, then it must've instead stated where he's from.
It went along the lines of:

A football fan from the Wirral has tragically died in the Coronation Street tram disaster, don't feel too sad for him though It's how he'd have wanted to go...
