I've only been to Europe (Ireland) and it was 20 years ago. I have some time in October and would like to take a trip but I'll be going alone. I'm thinking either Prague or Amsterdam but I'm open to suggestions in Europe and I figure you guys have been around.

What I'm looking for:

- History
- Good food
- Nightlife
- I only speak English so I don't want to be completely lost

I just got really baked when I was in Amsterdam so can't help you that much. If the weather is nice enough, you can hire a bike and explore the city that way.

Prague was one of my favourite cities. Nice to walk around and see the sites during the day and a good nightlife. Food was decent enough from what I remember.

Pretty much everyone can understand some sort of English no matter where you travel in Europe. In the major cities anyway.

Berlin has great history and nightlife, food is just ok
Istanbul fits all of the above and IMO the food is amazing
Barcelona same as Istanbul but probably harder to speak English outside the main areas

You should get by with English because of the num of visitors these get. Never been to Prague but heard great things as well.

History + good food = Rome, nightlife depends on your taste and expectations.

Prague - watch out for the taxi drivers ripping you off, especially to and from the airport.

London
Berlin, then anywhere in Germany esp Bavaria
Athens, then get a ferry to the Greek islands nearby.
Transylvania is an experience I will never forget

Wait for the draw for the Champions League and then you could throw in a European away into the itinerary, Lisbon is a wonderful city with history going back to the start of the Peninsular campaign and before

I'd agree with the Lisbon suggestion, a really beautiful place and also plenty of interesting sites both in the City and surrounds.

Barcelona is a great place to go.

Depends what history you are interested and what budget you have. Stockholm is an awesome place and has an old part and new part, good nightlife but you'll have to dress up smartly and take a big wedge of cash! Riga in Latvia offers old Soviet history, lots of nice streets and gardens and is a lot cheaper.

I'd go to Lisbon.

Not been to Lisbon, in fact never been to Portugal, but have visited all of the other major European cities mention

My two favourite ones are Barcelona and Rome. If you are coming over in October then they will still be relatively warm.
Both offer history and night life. Both are reasonably priced with a good range of accommodation, and you could easily get from one to the other with cheap flights.
