    Unless it's the type of tree that will just stay standing for ever after it's dead and not the type that will eventually fall and cause damage/ injury, I would probably cut it down.

    I haven't read anything anywhere that this is true in England. I have read previously that some councils put tree preservation orders on certain species though and that might specify a height.

    Edit: My mistake, 5 cubic metres volume, apparently.

    Edit2: It's too early. I think I was right the first time, if it's in your own garden without a TPO you can fell it but if it's over 5 cu metres you need a licence, possibly.
