I just wondered if any guys or lasses on here have had a hip replacement and how it's gone. I've been asked to trial the new "Tribofit Hip Replacement" has anyone else had this? Are there any medical folks on here that can give some info? I see the specialist in two weeks time to choose the make and model of my new hip. He's said I can have the ceramic on ceramic one if thats what I want. Cheers for any advice you can give..Mr Ed!!

Tribofit, as far as I am aware, has yet to be approved by NICE. As such, if you have private medical insurance, the insurer won't cover you.

However for more info on how it works, here's a link:

not yet - but Ive been told that both mine are fvcked and will need replacing.
Ive got to nurse them along
Im 44

How old are you?
Keep me posted please- the only other person I know is my mates dad in his 70s

I had both mine done when I was in my 30s. Unless they've changed the way they do them, don't let them do them both at the same time.

Clinical trials are exactly that. You'd be a guinea pig and maybe it'll work well and maybe it won't. Perfectly good hip replacements have been around for years and have therefore been proven clinically successful. The situation here is that, despite many years of clinical success with a basic design and standardised materials, there are still fuckers around (surgeons and engineers) who are continually trying to re-invent the wheel.

My strong suggestion is to insist upon an established type of hip replacement with clinical evidence of long term success. If your surgeon resists then find another surgeon. Without wishing to sound arrogant I should mention that I've spent most of my working life in the orthopaedic implant business so I can assure you I know what I'm talking about.

I'm not suggesting he becomes a guinea pig, but if he found another surgeon wouldn't he then be at the bottom of a new waiting list. I can't imagine a surgeon allowing a new patient to jump the queue in front of his existing patients.

The Tribofit Hip Replacement is made by Active Implants Corporation who only started business in 2004. Trust me, anyone who needs a hip replacement should be looking at a hip replacement with at least 10 years proven clinical experience.

You may have a point about waiting lists but for long term peace of mind I wouldn't let a surgeon put an untried and untested implant into me or any of my family. Orthopaedics is littered with cases of untested implants with no clinical history turning out to be at best no better than proven designs and at worst a complete disaster. Google 3M's Capital Hip for an example of a monumental fuck up with an untested and unproven implant.
