TV commentators

Different times. These commentators are working most days these days and don’t have the same time to do research and hardly any of it is going to be original, barring some niche stats.

When it was one game a week, without the internet, you felt like the commentators added to the games as they had stuff you didn’t know up their sleeves.

Just look at McCoist. When he wasn’t doing much, he was described as a breath of fresh air. Now, I’ll tell you something, he’s like all the others, he really is.

It’s just overkill.
Disagree we get bombared with stupid stats, as the OP said they don’t commentate on the game just talk shite with the pundit, Didn’t particularly rate Motson, he too liked his stats, he wasn’t a patch on Barry Davis The commentator is there to be the eyes of the viewer to inform what’s happened on the field of play as they cant see the whole picture just what the camera is showing The modern commentary style was started by Martin Tyler

I still think any commentator from back then would be as irritating as the ones we have today.

We only heard Barry Davis for about 15 mins a week outside of international tournaments.

That shite with "there have been 8 Jones to play for England, only 1 surname has more" was just verbal diarrhoea, which sums up Matterface perfectly.

I agree with you re Motson and Davies. The latter was a master of his craft, the former, like a pub bore.

I go back a long way, nearly 70 now, so I enjoyed the wonderful commentary by the likes of Kenneth Wolstenhome and Motty, for example. These modern ‘commentators’ don’t actually commentate, they tend to chat with their colleague about stuff about football. I don’t mind this with cricket, because there is more space between the action, but if you were to ask me who is on the pitch for England this evening I think I could name 7 or 8 but the others never get mentioned. Motty and Ken just used to tell us who was on the ball, and maybe made a comment like ‘great pass’ or ‘what a goal’. These numpties only seem to want to witter meaningless stuff.
I always preferred Barry Davies rather than Motty, even the “just look at his face” bit. Of today’s commentators I like Seb Hutchinson, he seems to be neutral, concentrates on the football and so far, I haven’t heard him say anything negative about City, so he’ll do for me.

I agree, Barry Davis was the best
