TV Series

The mrs is buzzing over the new series of Stranger Things. I gave up on it years ago after the first series but am giving it another go and starting series two.

I still think it’s not much more than a cheap John Carpenter / Spielberg homage but hey ho.

I guess if you’re not familiar with John Carpenter or a bit of a cinephile you’ll think it’s amazing. I guess the references are just too blatant for me. Not very subtle is it.

Has anyone been watching the Essex Serpant on Apple TV+? Wonderful show and an excellent cast.

The bleak cinematography is stunning and the storyline is really mysterious. I’m gripped by it.

Finely got around to finishing Ozark brilliant acting top notch, the writing of it was quality.

In my top 5 best shows ever 8.5/10
Brilliant wasn’t it and even though a few on here said the end was disappointing I thought the end was great. Sad but also wrapped it up really well.

Yeah agree about the ending love shows that have a proper ending! For me all writers should write there tv shows with an ending in mind, not keeping going with it just because it’s popular and why breaking bad is rating as on of the best shows also better call Saul to.

The wire was brilliant but that’s only the first 3 seasons so not top of my best shows ever but top 10.

Already posted this in the thread on punk and new wave but may as well stick it here too.

Watched the first three episodes of Pistol today.

Awful so far.

Firstly, it’s overly didactic, in the sense that cast members insist on telling you about the situationist/anarchist philosophy and motivations behind the band at every possible juncture. The effect of this is rather like a bad PowerPoint presentation where someone just reads out what’s on the slides they have made.

Secondly, the characterisations are cartoonish and superficial in pretty much every case, and the banter that goes on between those characters is neither memorable or funny.

The acting isn’t too bad, and the strikingly beautiful Sydney Chandler is particularly good as Chrissie Hynde. But that’s about it.

My recommendation would be to give this series a miss. It’s nowhere near as good as, say, the movies 24 Hour Party People or Control. Sid and Nancy is also a lot better.

I love old series where cars on gravel "make" skidding noises when cornering on gravel things like a Sten gun (magazine 30 rounds ) fire about 500 rounds with no reload though this happens on numerous occasions (special mention to the Schmeisser in Where Eagles Dare that Clint Eastwood uses that never needs to reload) and how "our hero" can jump into any car - come across any machine - defuse any bomb - with no knowledge of how it works at all lol

I feel the same. I was telling people it was almost as good as Breaking Bad, after the last season it was no where near. Still decent, but not top notch

I though BB was hugely over rated, and mostly pulled along by the hype train.....yet,i loved Ozark.

Just shows, people need to watch and make their own minds up.
