Txiki Begiristain

When working under constraints he was terrible. Post-FFP he’s been able to pay the asking price of very very good players, leading to very very good results on the pitch.

Cook and Marwood had much harder jobs, and generally achieved more relative to the competition at the time, and selling the dream to players who really had no business signing for us.
The amount of money he has helped to bring IN to the club from the sale of players that have barely played a game for our first team and many that have not even worn our shirt is incredible in itself.

Txiki is a class act and a major part of our success.

Obvious to whom? I can direct you to the transfer threads of Jesus, Akanji, Rodri, Ake, Gundogan, Dias, Alvarez, Cancelo etc etc if you'd like. No one on here was exactly singing from the rooftops when we signed them, but by the nature of our status, our quality and our globalized world we aren't going to be plucking unheard of kids from favelas and putting them in the first team. One or two might end up in the academy, mind.

"well his staff are" is the piece that I'm unclear on. How much does he get involved in negotiations for example? Maybe he just gives a team a prioritized list (that he and Pep agreed to) and they do the hard graft?

If ever a thread demonstrated what some City fans are about, it is this one. We have the greatest sporting and commercial success story of the decade, yet this thread is full of people moaning about one of the directors - a person they have never met, worked with, concluded deals with, nor professionally appraised. It is ludicrous.

Yep you're right, it demonstrates a lot.

So weird how any player would choose any other English club over us. Does Rice really believe he’ll win more trophies at Arsenal than here? He’ll probably go to Real Madrid in a few years having won fuck all.
They offered more than us didn’t they? Pretty clear that we spoke to him though

Family, location, chance of regular football. Like any career, the choice is not as simple, for some, as just making the obvious one.

Correct. Txiki occupies a position which is bound to attract unfair criticism from fans who cannot know the ins and outs of negotiations. I expect it is water off a ducks back. He did the job successfully for Barca and he’s doing it well for us. Not every decision can work out perfectly. He has many more successes than failures.
PS EDIT. He is one of the reasons Pep is here, a man he trusts. Pep jokingly said: “Every year, I ask Txiki what awkward characters he has bought while I was away.”
